Holiday movie premiers, turkey drop, craft show and more highlight weekend events around Carson City

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. A Thanksgiving Turkey Drop for families in need will be held Friday at Max Casino. The holiday movie premieres of “Feliz NaviDAD” and “Once Upon A Main Street” on Saturday will feature different venues in Carson City. Along with a craft show at the Carson Mall and live music, the state capital will be buzzing with excitement! Read on for more information.

Each October, Nevadans turn their attention to the state capitol, Carson City, home of the “official” Nevada Day Parade. Since 1938, the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City has been an annual coming together to celebrate Nevada’s heritage and the founding of this great state on October 31, 1864.

The Washiw Tribe shares culture, heritage at Children's Museum of Northern Nevada

On Saturday afternoon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada partnered with the Washiw Tribe to bring the first annual Indigenous Peoples' Heritage Day, which was free to the community.

Some of Northern Nevada's finest traditional, folk and contemporary artists will appear at the 2015 Nevada State Legislature in “The Work of Artists,” a series of interactive talks and demonstrations that bring a personal side to exhibited pieces. Designed to create an opportunity for artists to engage with community members and people working in or visiting the Nevada State Legislative Building, the presentations are at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 18 and 24, March 19 and 30, April 17 and May 7. All are free and open to the public in Room 3100.

Rowan debuts at Legislative Exhibition Series Feb. 2

“Pine Spirit” by Sande Rowan comes to the Legislative eXhibition Series Gallery Feb. 2 Working with Native American basket makers in the Southwest, Sande Rowan learned coiling techniques she incorporated into her own style as a professional basket maker. Her “Rainbow Spiral” pine needle basket is among her works featured in “Pine Spirit” at the Legislative eXhibition Series Gallery Feb. 2-20 in the Nevada Legislative Building.

Join instructor, Sande Rowan, in learning a few simple coil attachment techniques that will provide the fundamentals for beginning basket makers. It may also add a new dimension if you have previous experience. For this project we are fortunate to have custom ceramic bowls from Nevada Potter Kym Maehl as the attachment base. You will learn how to begin by attaching to the top of the bowl, how to build the coiled walls, how to add beads, and how to finish the rim. Pine needles will be used as the core material, with either twine or raffia as the binding.
