State Indian Commission honors Nevadans at Nov. 2 American Indian Achievement Awards Banquet

The Nevada Indian Commission will honor four Nevadans at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City for their important contributions to the American Indian community.

The American Indian Achievement Awards Banquet and Silent Auction is now in its fourth year and is the first statewide effort to recognize people in the state that have positively influenced the lives of American Indians.

The Nevada Day 2013 celebration continues all weekend long

As an "Old Timer" who was born and raised in Carson City, the Nevada Day celebration has always been something special in my life.

Through many years of living in Carson City, I have enjoyed many of the activities associated with the celebration of our state's admission to the Union, way back on October 31, 1864.

Carson City Parks and Recreation award recipients announced

The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation will present Special Recognition Awards for year 2013 recipients in a brief ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 4:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Pony Express Pavilion in Mills Park.

The public is invited to attend this free, outdoor event. The awards will be presented in the following categories:

Volunteer of the Years - Scott Tully, an individual who has an impressive, sustained record of donating his time and expertise for recreation programs.

Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company’s Les Misérables’ cast prepares for November shows

A cast of nearly 60 performers has been selected for Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company’s first-ever production of Les Misérables in November. The theatre company will present 10 performances of the famed international hit on weekends, Nov. 8-24, at the Carson City Community Center.

Nick Favero has been cast in the lead role Jean Valjean, whose dark life as a convict is transformed by a saintly bishop after he nearly returns to prison for stealing.

High Sierra Brewing Co. wins gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival

High Sierra Brewing Co., in Carson City took home a gold medal at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival competition held recently in Denver.

Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the largest national beer competition that recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. The top three winners in the competition’s 84 beer-style categories were announced Oct. 12 at the Great American Beer Festival awards ceremony held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colo.

Carson City Harvest Club to receive grant to produce locally grown food for local families

The Carson City Harvest Hub, along with food production programs in Douglas and Lyon counties, have been awarded funding through the Nevada Department of Agriculture, officials announced Monday.

Grant awards amounting to $250,730 will go to 13 programs throughout Northern Nevada for crop research, education marketing and production.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, An Algebraic Lens, by artist Ben Hoffman at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery from September 20, 2013 – January 23, 2014. The reception is free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open to the public Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.

Local Companies Recognized at the NNDA Pioneer Awards

On September 24, 2013 the Northern Nevada Development Authority held their Pioneer Awards event, recognizing new businesses that have relocated to Nevada along with those that have expanded in the past 12 months. This signature event also saw the largest attendance for this event in NNDA history with over 340 celebrating these announcements. In addition to this annual recognition businesses were selected in 9 different categories. For six weeks NNDA collected over 50 nominees in those categories with the winners being announced at the Pioneer Awards Banquet.

Carson City Memorial Wall nominations sought

The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation is accepting nominations of individuals, organizations, and businesses to be recognized for their contributions to Carson City's parks and recreation.

The selected names will be added to the Memorial Wall at the entrance to the Pony Express Pavilion at Mills Park, followed by an awards ceremony there on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 4:30 p.m. The categories are Organization of the Year, Business of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Volunteer of the Years.

Internet search giant Google has selected Carson City as the Silver State's leading digital business community. The Google eCity Awards recognize the strongest online business community in each state.

Carson City sheriff's motor officers take top spots in San Francisco competition

Last week four of the Carson City's Sheriff Office top motor officers were invited to compete in the San Francisco Police Department Motor Officer Training Challenge held at Giants Stadium.

The SFPD Training competition attracted 52 motor officers from police, sheriff and highway patrol departments from California Oregon and Nevada. In June the Carson City Sheriff's Office hosted its own 10th annual Motor Officer Training Challenge during the Legends of the West Bike and Car Fest.

High Desert Horsemen 'Trail Trial' set for Sept. 14

High Desert Horsemen, a local horse club that was established in 2005, will be holding its annual Trail Trial at Fort Churchill Boy Scout Camp, Weeks, NV on Saturday, September 14, 2013. The club donates a good portion of the proceeds back to the community. Last year's recipients were: Dayton Food Bank, Kids N Horses, Dog Town Canine Rescue, and Feeding Pets of the Homeless.

Silver Dollar Car Classic shines in final day at Mills Park

Epic cars, chrome, and plenty of old school memories continue today at Mills Park in Carson City. The annual Silver Dollar Car Classic winds up but there's still a chance to see some of the great hot rods in all of their polished glory.

The annual car show features hundreds of vehicles on display, along with concessions, a barbecue lunch and an awards ceremony.

15th Annual WNC Golf Classic Invites Sign-ups, Sponsors

Player sign-ups, event sponsorships and raffle prize donations are underway for the 15th annual Western Nevada Golf Classic.

The annual fundraiser tees off on Friday, Sept. 27, at Eagle Valley West Golf Course in Carson City. The event provides valuable assistance to students and programs at WNC.

“The tournament offers a great day of golf and camaraderie for a good cause,” said WNC Foundation Director Katie Leao. “I’m looking forward to seeing a strong turnout.”

Nevada Arts Council awards 2014 Folklife Apprenticeship opportunities

The Nevada Arts Council has awarded five Folklife Apprenticeship grants for 2014. The grants support projects developed by master artists and apprentices who share a common cultural background and an interest in preserving a specific traditional art.

A panel of specialists reviewed seven applications that requested $15,300 to support the work of master artists, along with supplies, tools, materials and related travel costs necessary to complete the apprenticeship. Five applicants were approved for full funding by the NAC board in June.

USDA Invites Applications for Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grants

CARSON CITY — In early July Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that USDA is accepting applications for grants to provide access to education, training and healthcare resources in rural areas. Up to $17.5 million is available through the Department’s Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) Grant Program, with individual awards up to $500,000.

Western Nevada Performing Arts Center dancers shine in Vegas competition

Carson City area students and members of the Western Nevada Performing Arts Center competition dance team participated in Master Dance Classes competing for cash awards and national recognition at the 2013 Encore Performing Arts National Championships in Las Vegas, June 17-21.

Western Nevada College softball, baseball teams earn academic recognition

At Western Nevada College, student-athletes continue to maintain perspective about their No. 1 priority in college: an education. WNC’s softball and baseball teams were again among the National Junior College Athletic
Association All-Academic teams honored this week.

In addition, six Wildcats were recognized with individual NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards. The Wildcats’ softball team collectively attained a 3.31 grade-point average, topping last year’s 3.18.

Fremont Elementary ends its long run as Carson City's only year-round school

It was a typical last day at Fremont Elementary School. Students signed yearbooks, received academic and attendance awards, ate Otter Pops. But Thursday’s celebration marked more than the end of a school year. It was the end of an era.

Car show at Johnny Rockets Carson City to benefit First Christian Church youth

The fourth annual First Christian Church Car Show will be held July 13 in the parking lot of Johnny Rockets in Carson City at Carson Lanes Retail Center. Organizers say there may be up to 100 classic cars on display for the event.

Cracker Box diner in Carson City earns TripAdvisor top honors

Serving hungry Carson City residents and visitors breakfast and lunch since 1980, the Cracker Box restaurant has received the coveted TripAdvisor Award of Excellence for 2013. The award recognizes restaurants that consistently receive high ratings from travelers and that rank in the top performing 10 percent of business worldwide.

Jerry Massad, who has owned and operated the Cracker Box diner for more than 33 years, says the honor was a pleasant surprise.

Carson City Symphony and BAC present Jeremy Keppelmann Harp Recital
