Comstock Lode of Cats show in Carson City this weekend

Attention all feline lovers: the first Comstock Lode of Cats will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 5-6, 2014 at Fuji Park in Carson City.

Fundraiser for the Animals benefit hosted by Wylie Animal Rescue, Bulldog Rescue

The Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation and Northern Nevada Bulldog Rescue will host a spring Fundraiser for the Animals on Sunday, April 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Hacienda Restaurant, 10580 N. McCarran Blvd., in Reno just off of Interstate 80.

The benefit features a buffet menu with Veggie options, Silent Auction, Raffle, door prizes. Celebrity M.C. is KOLO's Amanda Sanchez and music by Gabardine Sisters.

Tickets are $20 includes meal, 2 raffle tickets, and a drawing to win a door prize.

Lyon County investigates two alleged animal neglect cases

The Lyon County Animal Services Division initiated an investigation of the Starlight Sanctuary in Silver Springs, due to complaints of mistreatment of horses. Officers viewed approximately 70 horses on the property.

Officers found appropriate feed and water for the animals and observed some horses that were underweight or had other health concerns. Animal Services has requested veterinarian to respond to the site to determine the health of the animals in question.

Cowboy songs, storytelling with Mike Beck featured at Adele's Summer Concert Series

Mike Beck brings cowboy songs and the tradition of storytelling through music to Café at Adele’s Thursday, Aug. 22, as the Summer Concert Series on the Veranda continues.

A favorite performer on the Cowboy Poetry circuit, singer-songwriter, poet and working cowboy Beck is touring in support of his album “Tribute,” which showcases original horse songs written through the years, raising money for The Joyful Horse Project, a non-profit organization based in Austin, Texas that pairs combat veterans with rescue horses being trained for rehabilitation.

Lyon agencies assist with Artesia Road area evacuations; shelter at Smith Valley Baptist Church

Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Search and Rescue and Lyon County Animal Rescue Group are conducting human and animal evacuations.

Smith Valley Fire District and several mutual aid departments are providing structure protection in the Artesia Road area.

The fire is on the ridge of Pipeline Canyon. Aircraft are working the area in hopes of eliminating the threat to structures. No structures have been damaged at this point.

A shelter has been opened at the Smith Valley Baptist Church.

Reward offered in mountain lion poaching incident

A city and two nonprofit groups’ combined commitments more than double the reward offered for information on a brutal mountain lion killing.
The City of Calabasas in eastern Los Angeles County has matched the $5,000 reward being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of poachers who killed a mountain lion in the Santa Monica Mountains last month.
Two other groups put up an additional $1,700 for a total reward of $11,700.

Virginia City Pet Jamboree added to annual Pet Parade this weekend

VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. — Just as Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny formed a winning box office team in "Space Jam," the competition will be hot and hilarious for Pet Jam on the Comstock this weekend.
A Pet Jamboree has been added to the annual Virginia City Pet Parade.

The Pet Jam will be held on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Silverland Arena, directly behind the Silverland Inn & Suites, the same area used for the annual Virginia City Camel Races.

Dayton Food Pantry at Community Center on Dec. 16

With the big distribution day for the holidays on Thursday, Dec. 16, the Dayton Food Pantry will operate that day only from the Dayton Community Center at 170 Pike Street from noon to 5 p.m.

With unemployment in Lyon County at nearly 20 percent, donations are especially welcome this holiday season, explained Freida Carbery, director for the Pantry.

On the other days of December, the Food Pantry will be open for emergency food needs as usual, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4 Enterprise Way and Highway 50 (east of Smith’s Grocery) Monday through Friday.

Join the Pooch Plunge for Carson City dog park expansion

Parks 4 Paws, a nonprofit community group to develop designated dogs parks in Carson City, in conjunction with Carson City Parks and Recreation Department and the community pool will sponsor the second annual Pooch Plunge on Saturday, Sept. 18. Last year’s event was very entertaining to watch. It was debatable who had more fun – the dogs or their owners.
The event will held at the Carson Aquatic Facility Outdoor Pool, 841 N Roop St Carson City.
