Hello fellow anglers. I am here to tell you, Topaz Lake was a great opener this year. The weather on Jan. 1 surprised many anglers as we experienced some extreme winds as well as some good rain in the afternoon. But for those who stuck it out, they were all rewarded with a double rainbow.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will host January's Full Moon Hike on the Wild Horse Trail this Friday, Jan. 10. Not only will the hike feature some wild horses and the "Wolf Moon" it will also be a celebration of Carson City's first Winter Trails Day.

Last day of the decade! I feel peaceful, which is not what I felt at all at the beginning of this pivotal decade. I’m thinking about me in 2010. So different! CARSON CITY — The Nevada Arts Council announced the awarding of $22,639.60 in statewide grants to support individual artists in the production and presentation of artistic projects that will occur between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2020.

Bundle up and join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space for another adventure under the full moon. December's full moon hike this Wednesday will not only feature the beautiful "Cold Moon," we will also be getting a unique vantage point of the city's holiday decorations from atop C-Hill.

Hello fellow anglers, and a very "Merry Fishmas" to you all. Although we have a lull in the fishing due to Mother Nature, some anglers have been getting out to try the waters. As many of us look forward to opening day at Topaz Lake on Jan. 1, 2020, I must tell you of a big change this year.

Happy Saturday Carson City! Tired of the fog yet? Well, there's a big storm that's scheduled to push in tomorrow, so it'll be interesting to see how that changes the weather.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of holiday events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights, the 24th annual Parade of Lights in Gardnerville, the annual Project Empty Bowls dinner held at the Carson Mall, a Holiday Crawl in downtown Carson City and much more! Carson High and Douglas High teaming up together is right up there with the appearing of Halley’s Comet. Officially designated 1P/Halley, this is a short-period comet visible from Earth every 75–76 year and is the only known short-period comet that is visible to the naked eye from Earth and the only naked-eye comet that might appear twice in a human lifetime.

Hello fellow anglers. This time of year, I personally wish that it would stay daylight savings time. The morning we had the time change, Tom Blotter and I decided to venture up to Frenchman’s Lake for a little fishing activity. We had a long discussion on what would be the right time to meet in the morning to leave. Would it be 3 AM new time or 4 PM old time.  We left at 4 AM and got there in total darkness not prepared, I did not bring a flash light or a head light. Quite comically we prepped the boat using the light from our phones, then waited until we had enough light to safely launch. We fished until 2 pm to make sure we got home before dark.

Heading into Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019 activities around the capital city include a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, a Leave No Trace hike and, later, a full moon hike hosted by Carson City Parks and Rec, a Carson City School District board meeting, the monthly gathering of the Carson Fly Fishing Club, pole fitness and swing dance lessons at Yaple's Ballroom and more.

Join the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department this Tuesday, Nov. 12, for November's Full Moon Hike in the beautiful Kings Canyon area. While experiencing the sights and sounds of the night, a Park Ranger will be leading the group to the waterfall and around the North Kings Loop Trail.

Grab your mountain bikes and take a ride with a Park Ranger through Carson River Canyon on this exciting volunteer opportunity. On Saturday, Nov. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m., the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will be hosting a volunteer trash clean-up in the Carson River Canyon Open Space.

Good day, Carson City. Let’s get right into it. I’d like to introduce you to my friend, Echo. Echo is a one year old border collie mix and he is up for adoption and looking for a family.

Going into the eve of Halloween, teeth will be chattering as the weather calls for sunny skies but with a chill in the air and daytime temperatures in the upper 40s around the capital city. Events around town Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019 include a Halloween costume walk at Riverview Park in Carson City, a "trick or trunk" event in Dayton, art showings, storytelling at the Carson City Library and more.

The ghosts and zombies and costume super heroes will be out and about now through Thursday, either at organized events or Halloween night trick or treating around the Carson City area, including the Carson Mall, throughout downtown and at the Governor's Mansion.

Come join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space department at Riverview Park this Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. for the second annual Costume Hike. This year, we will be walking along the Carson River at Riverview Park learning about the history of Halloween. It will be a fun-filled adventure with opportunities for prizes, learning, and great photo opportunities.

Bring water, excellent costumes, flashlights, and your excitement! Riverview Park is located at 600 Marsh Rd, Carson City.

It’s official. On Thursday, Nevada joined the “Confluence of States,” a coalition of 16 bipartisan states centered on a set of shared principles, common values, and best practices surrounding outdoor recreation and conservation.

Hello fellow anglers. The season is changing just like the leaves in Alpine County. Renee and I took a drive up to Apple Hill located in Placerville, Calif., last week and were planning on doing some fishing in the higher lakes.

I would like to express mine and Karen’s immense gratitude for the years and love our community, friends, staff and family have shown through our various endeavors — Cafe at Adele’s, political runs and support of an array of non-profits.

Going into the second week of October, there's plenty of events around the capital city for this Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019 including a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered. There's also art showings, the grand opening of Carson City's Postal Annex, family movie night at the Carson City Library featuring "Muppets from Space," as well as Big Band jazz music with a fall theme at Living the Good Life and more. Hello fellow anglers. Fall is officially upon us and things are changing in our local area.

Lakes are opening for Public Lands Day. Even if you are not an angler and just enjoy the great outdoors, then September 28th is a day to get out and enjoy Public Lands Day. This day all national and state parks in the United States are free to all. This will include entrance, parking, camping and boating on this day (where applicable). The next Public Lands Day will be November 11th of this year.

Have you read a banned book lately?

Chances are, even if it was on your high school literature class reading list, you have read a book that somebody somewhere wanted to ban.

Along with libraries across the country, the Carson City Library will be celebrating Banned Books Week (Sept. 22-28) with a special event to thank authors whose work has been prohibited or challenged.

Between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, readers will gather at the library to write letters to authors to show support for writing about controversial subjects.

SILVER SPRINGS, Nev. — Fort Churchill State Historic Park is offering a variety of ranger-led programs during the month of October. Programs highlight the area’s rich history and abundant natural resources.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City will open its doors for free to all Museum Day ticketholders this Saturday, Sept. 21 as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 15th annual Museum Day.

Museum Day is a national celebration of boundless curiosity in which participating museums emulate the free admission policy at the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based museums.
