Fourth of July celebrations abound in the Carson City area. Fireworks can be found in Carson City, Virginia City, Reno, Sparks, and at both north and south shore of Lake Tahoe. There are several daytime events going on, so grab the kids, friends, and family and have a great four-day Independence Day weekend!

The weekend hasn’t even started, and I’m already exhausted just trying to decide what to do first! Live music, races, activities, and much more await you downtown as part of the Carson City Off-Road. Stewart Indian School is awash in bright colors, beadwork, and dancers from all across the country during their annual Fathers’ Day Pow Wow. Congratulations to the Show Tree Brewing Company by the Carson Hot Springs; their big grand opening bash includes multiple bands. Keep reading – this weekend has a whole lot to offer.

It’s time to tie up your shoelaces and prepare to walk or run in the Reno Hemophilia Walk & 5K to support the inherited bleeding disorder community in northern Nevada. The 1-Mile Walk & 5K Run will take place on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Bartley Ranch Regional Park, 6000 Bartley Ranch Rd., Reno.

Temperatures at 6,000 feet above sea level are always a little warmer this time of year in Virginia City, which hosts its annual Chili On the Comstock chili cook-off competition along C Street.

It’s going to be gorgeous all weekend long, and there are plenty of ways to take advantage of the sunny weather. The Annual Cops and Kids Open House at the Carson City Sheriff’s Department is a family favorite with free food, activities, and games. Treasure hunters will be kept busy with the Genoa Community Garage Sale, as well as one encompassing the Saratoga Springs area of Johnson Lane. Celebrate the Stewart Indian School's Father’s Day POW WOW June 16-18, 2017 with this summer’s happiest event at Stewart Indian School. The 5K Fun Run/Walk is Saturday, June 17, 2017. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the run beginning at 9 a.m.

Whether it's snowboarders, skiers, cyclists, runners or swimmers, Olympic and elite athletes utilize Lake Tahoe to push their training regimens to the limit with challenging and breathtaking terrain.

Holy moly, it’s going to be a busy weekend: busy and gorgeous out. A bowling tournament and the Comstock Shootout Soccer tournament have the hotels and motels busting at the seams. Students, K-12 and University, will enjoy the free swim day at the Carson Hot Springs. The Carson Nugget is turning into quite the downtown hotspot with a different headlining comedian each Friday, in addition to live music in two places. Check out their newest offering, the Beer Bar, during tonight's grand opening. So much more awaits you today, you'll just have to see what strikes your fancy.

A baseball star at Reed High School in Sparks, EJ Maldonado went on to play at Southern Idaho College. After graduation, he went on to the University of Nevada, Reno then into a career as the coordinator for the Western Regional Specialty Courts.

Healthy Communities Coalition’s Stand Tall youth leadership teams were one of just 9 groups across the U.S. awarded a Cardinal Health Foundation funded opportunity for training in peer to peer presentations and education about the harmful effects of prescription drug misuse and its tie to heroin abuse.

Spring has sprung, but apparently Mother Nature didn’t get the memo. Join the Carson Victory Rollers at the Carson Mall and take part in an indoor wine walk and rummage sale. Help Hot Spot Yoga and Fitness for Life celebrate their grand opening with free classes, health vendors, a 5K run, and more. Hit the dance floor with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; their monthly dance party is held in the Grand Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center. I just keep telling myself that the spring flowers will be amazing this year, but honestly, I’m growing weary of all this rain. Several of our hiking and bike trails have been affected, the sports fields are a muddy mess, and we are still in danger of more flooding.

It is time for a great workout at Carson High School to both support its students and potentially win a race, not to mention avoid a heart attack.

The seventh annual Safe and Sober 2017 5K Run/Walk at the CHS track facility, presented by Carson High Safe Grad Booster, is set for Feb. 11.

Carson High School students are currently working with great intensity to fulfill their Senior Projects, a graduation requirement.

All those involved encourage students to pursue a personal interest, something to benefit others, or something to prepare themselves for their future.

How adventurous are you? Ascent Runs continues their Be Bold, Run in the Cold Winter Trail Series with a five or ten kilometer run starting at Centennial Park. If you’d like a less strenuous outdoor activity, then the Downtown Business Association’s monthly Wine Walk is a perfect choice. The wine walk is a rain, snow, or shine event, so bring an umbrella. Please join us on February 11th at 10:00a.m. for the seventh annual Carson High Safe Grad - Safe & Sober 5K Run/Walk. This event is organized by volunteers of the Carson High Safe Grad Booster and will be held, once again, at the CHS Track/Field.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation, a non-profit organization that offers Dream Flights to U.S. military veterans living in retirement communities and long-term care facilities, received a $5,000 grant from Vital Life Foundation, a Marquis and Consonus Foundation that supports organizations and programs that provide meaning and vitality in the lives of seniors and staff members living and working in long-term care.

Healthy Communities Coalition’s Stand Tall member Cimberlin Andrus will speak about tobacco use awareness at the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion in Carson City on Dec. 8. Nine additional Stand Tall team members from Yerington, Fernley, Dayton and Silver Springs, and two of HCC’s certified community health workers, Kathy McIntosh and Tammy Sutton, will also attend.

It’s a common tradition to say what you are thankful for today. I am grateful for you, Carson City, my community. Enjoy the day with your families, friends, and loved ones. It’s a quiet day in town. The annual Turkey Trot Run begins at 8:30 a.m. in front of the Governor’s Mansion, costumes are always welcome. A free Thanksgiving Day meal at the Carson Nugget is offered to all. A few local taverns will open this evening for some after-feast libations.

Online registration for the annual Carson City Turkey Trot ends midnight Tuesday. Join organizers of this fun-filled, non-fattening Thanksgiving Day morning fun run and walk and give yourself an excuse for an extra piece of pie later in the day.

Silver Springs, Nevada – The public November breakfast meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties (HCC) at the Silver Springs Community Center takes place on Thursday November 10th at 9am.

October is behind us and this November weekend kicks off the holiday season with craft fairs, art shows, and plenty of fun. Get a jump on those New Year’s resolutions by participating in the first of the ‘Be Bold, Run in the Cold’ 5 or 10K runs that Ascent Runs is sponsoring. Let’s just call this Nevad-oween weekend. So much crazy fun awaits: whether it’s the celebration of our ‘new’ downtown, Halloween parties for kids and adults alike, or our State Museum’s 75th Anniversary. Start your day at the Museum, hang around for the downtown ribbon cutting and festivities, then join in the costumed fun as Blinky Man hits the streets. Do the time warp at the Brewery Arts Center: the Rocky Horror Picture Show Party starts at 8:30 p.m. This is going to be one amazing weekend, so let’s get this party started.

I’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.

Safe Grad is an all-night party for graduating seniors that has been going on for the last 30 years. Many of our community members have worked tirelessly to make sure this event happens every year. Without your help, it may be the last party CHS has. This really is a worthy organization and I would hate to see it go away. Since its inception we have not had one death due to drunk driving on the graduation night.
