Carson City breaks ground on new fire station, emergency operations center
Shovels turned Monday in Carson City at a ceremony to launch the beginning of construction for a new $18.4 million fire station and emergency operations center.
The 18,000 square foot facility, called Carson City Fire Station 55 and Emergency Operations Center, is being built at 3505 Butti Way. Construction is expected to be completed in summer of 2025.
“The need for a new fire station was first identified as part of a study conducted 23 years ago and it will be the first new fire station in Carson City since the mid-1970s," said Fire Chief Sean Slamon in a news release prior to the ceremony. "The Fire Department is excited to improve emergency response times in the community with this new facility."
“Our community has grown since the 1970s and we are honored to be able to build a much-needed resource for our emergency first responders,” said Carson City Public Works Director Darren Schulz, earlier this month.
Carson City Public Works is managing the project for the Fire Department, Emergency Management, and Information Technology. TSK Architects designed the new fire station and CORE Construction will build it.
Carson City Mayor Lori Bagwell said the city has known for 24 years that it needed the facility and that the ceremony marks the beginning. The cost of the project is estimated to be $18.4 million.
According to KTVN, Bagwell said the city used about $2.6 million from its general fund and received direct funding from Congressmen Mark Amodei, Senator Jacky Rosen and Senator Catherine Cortez Masto who helped them secure $2 million as a direct appropriation. The city also received $4.6 million from the Federal ARPA, $75,000 from developers on a nearby project and a bond of $8.6 million.
Earlier this year, the Carson City Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the project, which that includes an 18,000-square-foot facility to serve as a fire station, an emergency operations center, IT offices, and a backup dispatch station. It will be the fifth fire station in Carson City.
