Historian and author David Antonucci releases new book on Tahoe's environmental history

Historian and Author David C. Antonucci has a new book, the Environmental History of Lake Tahoe. The story of Lake Tahoe is the story of people and the environment and their reciprocal influences. The environment shaped the lives of the early people of Tahoe, and later, people shaped the Tahoe environment.
Native peoples, pioneers, and early visitors conformed to the environment's demands and existed in harmony with their surroundings. By 1860, loggers, hoteliers, ranchers, developers, and tourists imposed their demands on Tahoe's resources, forever changing it for the generations that followed. Early on, the motivation for resource exploitation for personal benefit prevailed but then collided with and became subordinate to rising beliefs in the preservation and appreciation of our natural resources.
We see the current trajectory of the Lake Tahoe environment policy moving toward a balance between human needs and sustainability while coping impacts of climate change.
This book follows the evolution of environmental change at Lake Tahoe as seen through the eyes of those who caused it and those who sought to prevent it.
About the Author
David C. Antonucci has resided in the Lake Tahoe area for over forty-five years. He received bachelor's and master’s degrees in civil and environmental engineering from California State Polytechnic University and Oregon State University and is a licensed professional engineer.
His professional career started in 1973 and included senior manager and policy-level positions in the public sector. He oversaw water pollution enforcement at Lake Tahoe for the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board between 1975-1980. For twenty years, he managed a special district in Tahoe City responsible for water, sewer, parks, and recreation services. The author enjoys cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, mountain, road, and fat biking, flatwater kayaking, hiking, and RV camping. He resides in Tahoma, California, with his spouse, Jenny Antonucci.
He wrote the award-winning Snowball’s Chance – the Story of the 1960 Olympic Winter Games, The 1960 Winter Olympics, and Fairest Picture – Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe. He regularly lectures at the Tahoe Environmental Research Center and gives presentations to conference groups on Tahoe history and natural science.
