Carson City Pop Warner Midget Cheer Squad has first ever National Tournament in its sights
The Carson City Pop Warner Midget Cheer Squad achieved first place in its division at the Sagebrush Empire District Cheer Competition held at Sparks Highs School on November 3, 2012. In so doing, the team has put themselves in the position to qualify for the national championships for the first time in the program’s history.
The CCPW Midget Cheer Team had no major deductions at the district competition. The girls so impressed the scoring judges that they were told they had a very good shot at winning the upcoming Pop Warner Pacific Northwest Regional Cheer and Dance Championship at the University of Santa Clara in Santa Clara, CA, on November 23, 2012.
If the girls win at Santa Clara, then they automatically earn a trip to Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL, where they will compete in the 2012 Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Championships, held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
What’s more impressive is that the CCPW Midget Cheer team scored so high at districts this year that it has already technically qualified for nationals. But CCPW believes that the girls should earn their way to the national championships. As such, they will await their final score at regionals over Thanksgiving break before making the trip to nationals official.
This year’s team — made up of 32 girls ages 11 to 15 years old—is the largest squad that the CCPW Cheer Midgets has ever fielded. The girls have worked very hard over the past three months to learn not only dance, cheers and stunting; they have also gained valuable skills in spirit, team work, discipline, coordination, and leadership.
But these girls are in desperate need of donations to be fully funded for the regional trip to Santa Clara, November 22-24, 2012. They are about $1,200 short of being fully funded for regionals this year. The trip to nationals in Florida will cost about $48,600 to fully fund the team.
The costs of these out-of-town competitions are cost prohibitive for most of the girls’ parents, and current economic conditions make fronting these costs even more daunting for the families.
The CCPW Cheer Program has had a positive effect on the youth in its community. This year’s squad includes a special needs child who has thrived in the program, and who has personally benefited from the structure that CCPW Cheer provides. But she is just one success story that is very telling of Pop Warner’s positive impact on the youth in the Carson City community.
CCPW is appealing to the greater Northern Nevada community for financial support of its Midget Cheer team; to assist these girls and their families in the pursuit of a dream that may come around only once in their lifetimes; and to help them achieve what they have worked so hard to earn. CCPW Midget Cheer is grateful for any assistance its neighbors are able to provide them.
Both private donations and corporate sponsorships are welcomed.
At the national championships out squad will have warm-ups and t-shirts displaying the insignias of their sponsors.
Anyone interested in sponsoring the team should contact CCPW Cheer Coordinator Genevieve Dickinson at 775-297-6006 or email at: senatorscheerccpw@gmail.com
