Carson football action: Senators top Damonte in nail-biter
The Senators football team of Carson High School took on the Mustangs of Damonte Ranch High School under the Friday night southeast Reno lights.
This week's match up was the opening of league play throughout the northern region and it was "Pink Night" for students and parents to celebrate the first game of October and breast cancer awareness. The game was incredibly close from the opening kick off to the final whistle. In the end Carson was victorious.
Damonte Ranch received the opening kick off a drove down the field to set up at first and goal on the five yard line, but Carson's defense was able to make the goal line stand and turned the ball over on downs. Then after a couple of failed drives, it was Damonte Ranch who would strike first putting 7 on the board in the first.
The Carson City Senators would come back with a lengthy field goal to put themselves on the board, but the Mustangs continued to look very strong with their offense and drove the ball down the field to put another 7 on the board.
Then Carson quarterback Nolan Shine broke away on a massive 72 yard touchdown run to bring the Senators within a one possession game. Then in the closing stages of the second half Carson kicked another field goal to leave the score at 14-13 Damonte into the final moments of the half.
Damonte Ranch, however, made every one of those last moments count and found the end zone one more time right before half to create the first half score of 21-13 Damonte.
To start the second half Carson would be the first to draw blood finding the endzone and converting the two point conversion to leave the score early in the half knotted up at 21 all.
Then, very late in the forth quarter Carson punched in yet another filed goal to leave the Mustangs with the ball and just under a minute left to play.
The perseverance of the Mustangs never seemed to fail in this game as they found the endzone with only 46 ticks left on the clock. Then, the Senators quarterback Joe Nelson threw a bomb to Asa Carter on the very first play after the ensuing kick off and took it to the house for over 75 yards.
Then Damonte took over possession with just 28 seconds left in the game, but ran out of late game magic and ultimately would fall to the Senators with a final score of Carson: 31, Damonte: 28.
