Carson River Canyon receives new visitor guide, kiosk map and more
With the help of Boy Scout Troop 33, Carson River Canyon Open Space received some much needed improvements for visitors this weekend! Due to the secluded nature of this Open Space, Chris Collins focused his Eagle Scout project on signage within Carson River Canyon to speed up emergency response.
The area now includes a new kiosk map near the entrance to the Open Space, waypoint signage directing visitors (and emergency services) to dedicated day use areas, and a downloadable Visitor Guide accessed via QR code at the kiosk. When an emergency occurs, visitors will have a better idea of where they are and emergency personal will be able to respond more effectively.
Did you know that Carson River Canyon and Brunswick Canyon are two different areas? Brunswick Canyon runs South at the granite quarry, while Carson River Canyon continues East following the Carson River.
These two canyons are often referred to as Brunswick Canyon which can become confusing for emergency response and visitor use. The Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space Department hopes this common misconception will be addressed with these new navigational improvements.
Carson River Canyon Open Space stretches three miles along the Carson River following the historic Virginia and Truckee Railroad Grade. The Open Space can be found about one mile East from Deer Run Bridge.
The area plays host to many outdoor activities including fishing, river rafting, swimming, off-highway vehicle exploration, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Visitors can relax in one of the six day use areas named after the historic ore reduction and lumber mills that once occupied the space.
The area is open daily from dawn to dusk. The Park Rangers would like to remind visitors camping, open flames, target shooting, and wood gathering are all prohibited in Carson River Canyon. The river is very fast for this time of year, so it’s important to scout out rapids and know your abilities before embarking on a rafting/kayaking trip through the canyon.
