Comstock town offers arts and science events all summer long

Silver City's summer STEAM activities (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) got its start in 2004. The historic Comstock community’s summer 2022 public programming, sponsored by many groups, includes family friendly outdoor concerts, a monthly game night, and a meditation session.

For adults 55+, there’s a poetry writing workshop with Nevada Poet Laureate Gailmarie Pahmeier. For parents and their children, there’s Saturday morning storytime at the library, and Tuesday morning events including a NASA space exploration science workshop; a morning of pre-K fun with United Way; an engineering and robotics mini-camp; a bird feeder building activity using recycled materials; and interactive lessons about bees and other pollinators.

Ongoing Activities in Silver City

First Tuesdays from 7pm-9pm - Coffee House at the Silver City Schoolhouse. Music, game night, art projects, and other themes depending on the volunteer host.

Tuesdays and Saturdays - Silver City Volunteer Library is located inside the Schoolhouse. Open hours, hosted by community volunteers, are Tuesdays 6pm-7pm and Saturdays 10am-noon. On Saturdays at 10:30am there will be storytime for children accompanied by their parents (babies welcome)!

Mondays June 20 – July 18 at 5:30 PM until 7 PM (registration required)– Writing Series for Adults 55+ with Nevada Poet Laureate Gailmarie Pahmeier. The series of four poetry writing sessions for older adults will be held on Mondays beginning on June 20, 2022 and concluding on July 18, 2022 (no class Monday July 4th). There will be a culminating event on Monday, July 25, 2022. This activity is made possible by a grant provided by the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies in partnership with E.A. Michelson Philanthropy, and supported in part by the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Special Events

Sunday, July 3 from noon to 6pm - Silver Palooza Music & Art Festival featuring music by Drinking with Clowns, Darren Senn, Betty & James, and Smilin’ Bob, plus food, beverages, lawn games, a cake walk, a laser engraving booth, and visiting artist Brian Schorn’s art show, Comstock Wabi Sabi. Donation encouraged. All proceeds go to the Silver City Preservation Society, a nonprofit.

Saturday, August 13 at 6:00pm - Kantu Inka’s Summer Concert in the Park – a free family friendly event on the outdoor stage in Silver City’s park funded by the Resident Artist Program in Silver City. Bring your own lawn chairs and picnic dinner. Traditional Andean Peruvian music on zampoña, quena, charango, guitar and bombo.

Tuesday Morning Summer STEAM Program Events

Tuesday June 14 from 10am-noon- Find out about the benefits of bees and other pollinators and how to preserve their habitat. Fun activities led by Kelly Clark, Chair of Carson City’s Bee City committee, and Linda Groves, master beekeeper. For parents and their kids ages 5 to 10 years. Part of Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties’ (HCC) annual summer STEAM program for parents and their children.

Tuesday June 21 from 10am-noon - United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra brings hands-on fun for parents with their children ages 0 to six years. Crafts, healthy snacks, free books, school readiness activities, toothbrushes, and more for preschoolers. Resource booth with Community Chest. Part of HCC’s summer program.

Tuesday June 28 from 10am-noon - Parents with their children ages 8 to 12 are invited for fun activities focusing on Space Exploration Science. The presenter, Donald M. Scott, has a decade of experience with the Aerospace Education Services Program where he worked with NASA astronauts and scientists to develop K-12 activities. Experience activities with model rockets, an orbital mechanics turntable, simple spectroscopy, mission patch design. Related art/poetry are integrated into the day. Part of HCC’s summer program.

Tuesday July 5 from 10am-noon - artist Brian Schorn, a certified meditation instructor with training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, will lead a free meditation session. No experience necessary. Everyone welcome. Co-sponsored by the Resident Artist Program in Silver City and HCC.

Tuesday July 12 from 10am-noon - at the Silver Pavilion stage in the park – discover experimental improv with Silver City’s summer artist-in-residence, Brian Schorn and Silver City musician Mylo McCormick. Michigan-based multi-disciplinary artist Brian’s discography includes field recording, experimental jazz, musique concrete, etc. His music has been broadcast on radio stations around the world. Mylo McCormick, recognized for “Best Entertainment in Rural Nevada” by Nevada Magazine in 2019, performs with bands at venues throughout Northern Nevada. Bring a chair and enjoy the free show, which is sponsored by the Resident Artist Program with additional support from HCC.

Tuesday July 19 from 10am-noon – Robotics engineering mini-camp for boys and girls ages 8-14 and their parents. The popular annual event is led by the Society of Women Engineers Sierra Nevada Section and FIRST Nevada. Kids will compete in an exciting SumoBot competition after they write a program to make their robots go forward and back and drive in a square. Then they’ll build a robot “arm” and form teams to compete with their SumoBots! Part of HCC’s summer program.

Tuesday August 2 from 10am-noon – Dayton author Lisa Selmi will read from her endearing children's book called "Oscar's Big Adventure.” This special storytime is sponsored by Healthy Communities in partnership with the Silver City Volunteer Library. The story is about an aging dog who reminds us that we are never too old to seek new friendships and adventures. Part of HCC’s summer program.

Tuesday August 9 from 10am-noon: Lisa Taylor, County Educator with University Nevada Cooperative Extension, will lead kids in a “Renew, Re-use, Recycle” activity. Children will make and take home their own bird feeder made from reycled items. We’ll learn about the benefits of recycling and repurposing to reduce waste, and we’ll also learn a little about birds as pollinators. Part of HCC’s summer program.

Carson City Historical Society hosts local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff, who will present a Chautauqua on "Snowshoe Thompson: Superhero of the Sierra" from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11 in the Carriage House behind the Foreman-Roberts Historic House located at 1207 Carson Street, Carson City, during Mark Twain Days.

On the morning of Saturday, May 11, volunteers will fan out across the Truckee River watershed to collect and test water samples from creeks, streams, smaller lakes, and Lake Tahoe itself to take a “snapshot” of water quality at a single moment in time for this important source of drinking water and outdoor recreation.

The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners will hold a special meeting May 20 that will include the final adoption of the County Budget Fiscal Year 2024-25.

A 44-year-old man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of unlawful occupancy of real property and violation of a suspended sentence, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report. The man was occupying the home of a deceased person without permission.

The Nevada Artists Association Art Gallery in Carson City presents the "Just the Right Size" show with 130 entries by 31 local Nevada artists.

UPDATE 3:11 PM: The fire in the 1400 block of Monte Rosa Drive was contained to the garage and was knocked down quickly, according to CCFD Battalion Chief Jon Pedrini. The fire did not extend to the main structure. No one was home and there were no injuries. The cause is under investigation.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called late Monday morning to a structure fire in the 1400 block of Monte Rosa Drive.

For years, advocates have called upon presidential administrations to reclassify marijuana or deschedule it entirely from the DEA’s list of controlled substances.

Firefighters in Yerington and the Lyon County Sheriff's Office are on scene Monday morning of a semi truck rollover on Aiazzi Lane and Miller Road in Yerington. The entire area is closed to all traffic.

You will find something of interest or my name’s not Mark Twain, or used to be anyways. And this year Virginia City is joining in on the fun along with Carson City. Wow!

Nevada Division of Forestry state nursery is open for business beginning Thursday, May 9. When we first bought our home in 1988 with its 2.5 acres, there were some poplars, pines, blue spruce, willows, and grass, but little else. I soon discovered the state nursery and filled the yard with flowering shrubs and other plants. I added lilacs, sand cherries, golden and Nevada currants, sumacs, Apache plumes, and incense cedars.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested a Dayton man Saturday for possession of child pornography. During the investigation, officers also learned the man was a local little league coach.

Mrs. Carson City America, Kassandra Tapia, is set to grace the stage of the Mrs. Nevada America Pageant, scheduled to take place on June 9, 2024, in Las Vegas. As part of Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday celebration, the Smokey Reading Challenge is underway. Launched this morning at the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records in Carson City, the program is designed to engage children across Nevada in an exciting reading journey to learn about wildfire prevention, forests, and careers in natural resources with Smokey Bear.

The Nevada Jeep Club held their first Washoe Valley Cleanup on Saturday, May 4 and collected more than 450 pounds of trash along Highway 395.

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club members continue celebrating the organization’s 127th year with a presentation on the upcoming Jazz and Beyond festival.

At the club’s dinner meeting on Thursday, May 16, Cherie Shipley, a member of the event planning committee, will talk about the annual Jazz and Beyond festival, how it formed, and the impact it has had on the community. Jazz and Beyond is scheduled for August 16 to August 25, 2024.
