Department of Public Safety Announces New Chief of Highway Patrol
The Department of Public Safety is pleased to announce the appointment of Troy L. Abney to the position of Chief of the Nevada Highway Patrol. The department conducted a national search to fill the position and made an offer to Abney based on his extensive knowledge and experience.
“Chief Abney is an experienced professional who brings many years of leadership and will lead the division comprised of 647 employees both sworn and non-sworn,” said Director Chris Perry.
Abney offers 28 years of increasingly progressive law enforcement experience. He retired as Assistant Chief of the California Highway Patrol where he led up to 786 sworn and non-sworn members. His most recent role was the Director of Training at the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.
Mr. Abney has completed several leadership training programs to include the FBI National Academy, the Queensland Police Service Strategic Management Studies in Policing, the California Officer Standards and Training (POST) Executive Development Course, the California Chiefs of Police Association Role of the Police Chief, and the Southern Police Institutes Chief Executive Course. Additionally, he is a graduate and instructor in the International Association of Chiefs of Police Leadership in Police Organizations. Furthermore, Mr. Abney holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in Business Administration.
“Chief Abney’s extensive professional and personal knowledge, skills, and abilities will be an excellent fit for the Nevada Highway Patrol and the State of Nevada,” said Deputy Director James Wright.
