Contemporary Mokuhanga: Japanese Woodblock Prints in Exhibition
Part 1 of “Artist In Residence” — Solo Exhibit of Contemporary Mokuhanga: Japanese Woodblock original prints by Jackie Pias Carlin at the Atrium Gallery, Western Nevada College opening March 6 through May 11, 2023.
Japanese Woodblock printing process uses carved negative sketches on woodblocks then rubbed on paper with a baren to produce original hand-pulled prints. Each woodblock produces one color.
This is Carlin's 1st one-woman exhibit in Nevada since Hawai`i. Carlin moved to Carson City in 2015 continuing her artwork through many mediums in flora, still life, and nature. She is featured in PBSReno's Season 7, Episodes 709, and 712 that introduces her mokuhanga work.
Carlin has workshopped in woodblocks with the late Don Roberts of Oregon, Hiroki Morinoue of Hawai`i, and Laura Boswell of the United Kingdom.
Her Kapa (Hawaiian mulberry cloth) Triptych "My Neighborhood: Pinion Hills, Carson River, Cottonwoods" is in the Polynesian Collection of the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, NV.
