Outdoors with Don Q: Selected personal memories from the year 2012

As I look forward to the year of 2013 with high expectations, hopes and dreams, this is a good time to reflect back on some selected personal memories from the rapidly ending year of 2012.
Here are my top memories of this year:

Carson City skates into the holiday season at Arlington Square Ice Rink

Carson City teens, little ones and families by the dozens turned a black Friday into a perfectly crystal clear opening day of skating at Arlington Square Ice Rink.
Kicking off its third season, the rink at corner of North Robinson and Carson Street across from the Carson Nugget has become a Carson City favorite holiday feature. By 4 p.m. more than 150 skaters had signed in as part of Family Skate Day, said Brady Roser, recreation supervisor for Arlington Square.
"There's been a lot of excitement for us to open and we're seeing it today," said Roser.

Hundreds show for Carson Nugget's 58th Thanksgiving community dinner

It was a happy, hearty Thanksgiving in Carson City for hundreds of Carson Nugget guests who arrived for the 58th annual free community dinner. Volunteers by the dozens served everyone who walked in the door — from young families to senior citizens and all ages in between.

Outdoors with Don Q: November 18 is a very significant date in the Far North

November 18 is a very significant date in the lives of several thousand hardy Alaskans. Those folks live in a unique location known as Barrow, Alaska, which is the northernmost community in the United States.
It is located in the Far North, on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, about 320 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
On November 18, the sun sets below the horizon at Barrow and it will not peek back up over the horizon until January 23 (weather permitting).
That’s more than two months without sunshine. Wow!

Heavenly at Lake Tahoe celebrates snow arrival with early opening

Lifts began turning at Heavenly Mountain Resort at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, signaling winter's return to Lake Tahoe. Early-season storms combined with the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system have given Heavenly the ability to stage its earliest opening since 2004-05. All access to the mountain at this time is through the Heavenly Gondola and Tamarack Express.
