On Sunday morning I stopped by Empire Ranch Golf Course in Carson City to see what the prospects of golf might be this week. It was still covered in snow but the temperature was warming so there is still hope for the end of the week.

Prescribed fire operations to continue at Lake Tahoe this week

Conditions and weather permitting, the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team will continue prescribed fire operations at Lake Tahoe. North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District is scheduled to burn piles this week near Incline Village.

Tahoe's 4 feet of weekend snow sets up ideal early Christmas holiday ski conditions

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” took on a whole new meaning this past weekend as more than four feet of snow fell on Tahoe ski resorts, guaranteeing prime conditions for the holidays. With roads plowed, a forecast of sunshine throughout the week, and expanded ski terrain now open, Santa arrived early for winter enthusiasts and the area’s hospitality businesses.

Drift smoke possible due to pile burning at Lake Tahoe's east shore

Conditions and weather permitting, U.S. Forest Service firefighters will be burning piles beginning today, Thursday, on the East Shore to remove excess vegetation (fuels) that can feed wildfires. Smoke will be present and may affect the following areas through this weekend: Hwy 50 on the East Shore, Glenbrook, Spooner Summit and Carson City.

Last night was the full moon of December and one of its names is "The Cold Moon." Last night Mars was in opposition and earlier in the evening the moon eclipsed Mars for a period of time. The photos of the moon and Mars were taken after it reappeared in the sky.

Fishing report: A few safety tips if headed to or going over the Sierra

Hello fellow anglers. As I write this, Mother Nature is building up a good storm on the west side of the Sierra and is headed our way. Although fishing right now may not be on your mind, safety should always be. By the end of this weekend, the higher passes in and out of the Tahoe area will have feet of snow on them.

California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy, Nevada Division of Forestry, North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will be burning piles in numerous locations. Smoke will be present.
