Utility Telephone to Acquire Minden-based WPTI Telecom

Utility Telephone, Inc. will acquire the customer base and network assets of Minden-based DSL and VoIP provider WPTI Telecom, LLC.

Under the terms of the agreement, Utility will acquire customers throughout the Reno, Carson City and Douglas-county markets, and will add a substantial DSL footprint to Utility’s existing Nevada network which includes a 2.5 Gigabit-per-second fiber-optic network linking Reno, Carson City and Fernley.

Kohl's prepares for Sept. 29 Carson City grand opening

After 3,000 people applied for 130 positions last month, Kohl's department store in Carson City is preparing for a Sept. 29 grand opening.
The store is located in the old Mervyn's building at 3871 South Carson Street in the Eagle Station center next to Raley's. The company held a series of job fairs from Aug. 8-12.
The Wisconsin-based company is hiring temporary part-time credit associate positions for the Carson store, according to its website.

New battlefield for Fridays@3rd Street war: Court

The dispute between the Mom & Pop's Diner owner Doug Cramer and Brewery Arts Center director John Procaccini is heading for small claims court.

I wrote about this dispute back in June, adding to the story from the Appeal on the subject.

In short, Cramer signed a contract that included a diagram that showed where the bars operated by Mom & Pop's and Firkin & Fox were to be located. But those locations were changed in a way that Cramer claims was detrimental to his business, cutting off access to the bulk of the crowd. Procaccini admits that changes were made to the bar locations, but doesn't agree that the changes constitutes a breach of contract.

Chromalloy lays off 91 Carson City positions

Chromalloy Gas Turbine Corporation in Carson City has eliminated 12 full time and 79 contract employees, for a total of 91 people who have gotten their pink slips, officials confirmed today.

"To remain competitive, Chromalloy makes ongoing adjustments to our work force based on the business climate. The company announced a reduction of 79 contractor positions at our Carson City facility two weeks ago. Today we notified 12 full-time staff that their positions have been eliminated," said Cathy Gedvilas, spokesperson for Chromalloy.

Indian professor comes to Carson City to study mushroom production

Dr. Varun Kumar, Ph.D., the dean of biosciences at Shri Ram College in Muzaffarnagar, India, is participating in a post-doctoral program offered by Aloha Medicinals of Carson City.

Dr. Kumar is studying mushroom production techniques pioneered by Aloha Medicinals, a leader in the field of medicinal mushrooms.

Ghana certifies Nevada-made product for HIV treatment

The Ministry of Health in Ghana has certified one of the products produced by Carson City, Nevada-based Aloha Medicinals, as a sole therapeutic treatment for HIV infection.

The government ran three independent clinical trials of the product this year, and found it to be effective for those infected with HIV, but who have not yet developed symptoms of AIDS.

Informational Resource for Nevada Homeowners and HOAs Available Online

In an effort to fulfill a need to keep homeowners up-to-date in this ever-changing and challenging economy, Homeowner Talk, a public television show and online resource was launched earlier this year. The show features several guests with a variety of expertise including: landscaping, insurance, finance, and foreclosures. New episodes have been planned and will air in September, October and November.

Two Carson City businesses to close

Word was out today that two local businesses will be closing their doors.

First, there is City Cafe Bakery on South Carson Street. The building they are in was taken over by new owners, and they can't seem to come to an agreement over rent.

Carson City's new business resource center now open

The city's new Business Resource and Innovation Center is now open for business.

Located across Proctor Street from City Hall, the center brings together the building, planning, business license and business development departments under one roof for the first time. The center also makes resources from the Carson City Library available for those who need to do research for starting or expanding their businesses.

Carson City, Carson Valley area and Lake Tahoe south shore see June gaming revenue increase

The Carson Valley region, which includes Carson City, and the Stateline casino corridor at South Shore Lake Tahoe were the only two regions in Nevada that saw an increase rather than a decrease in gaming revenue for the month of June, the state's gaming control board reported today.
The casinos in the Carson City and Carson Valley area climbed by 5.1 percent over the fiscal year for June, followed by the Tahoe casinos, which jumped to 13.5 percent.

The job fair will be at the Carson City Plaza Hotel Conference Center, 801 South Carson Street, Carson City.

Technical issues with Carson Now site

A massive traffic spike forced Carson Now offline at about 8:45 this morning. The site is back online now (or else you wouldn't be reading this) on a new server with more resources, but we are still dealing with a few issues.
