46th annual Blake Jones Trout Derby north of Bishop

This year marks the 46th consecutive year that Bishop, California will celebrate the sport of trout fishing by hosting an early season derby bearing the name of legendary fisherman Blake Jones.

On Saturday, March 16th the Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce expects upwards of 1,000 anglers to participate in the contest, which is one of the state’s biggest annual single-day fishing events.

Murder suspect is placed on no-bail hold

The man accused in the death of 19-year-old Desiree Bragg was ordered held without bail during a Friday hearing. Carson City resident Leonardo Cardoza, 28, was arraigned on a charge of open murder with a deadly weapon.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents its monthly dance party Feb. 23 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. At 7 p.m., Rainer Herm will teach multi-level country two-step. Social dance is 8-10:30 p.m. Partners are not required. Carson City officers arrest man in tow truck going 95 mph with emergency lights on

A 57-year-old Carson City caregiver was arrested early Friday morning after deputies clocked the man doing at least 95 mph in a 55 mph zone.
The incident happened at 4:47 a.m. The man was arrested at the intersection of Highway 50 and Flint Road. He faces a misdemeanor speeding charge, as well as misdemeanor reckless wanton driving, and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

The white walls on the second floor, outside the banquet rooms of the Carson Nugget, are in the process of being transformed. Right now they contain the mural paintings of Kit Carson, V&T Railroad, Dat So La Lee, the Carson Mint, Carson Nugget, Roosevelt’s Speech Capital Building, Carson Brewery and Capital Building; but soon those walls could contain so much more.

“The hope is to show Carson City’s uniqueness as well as the love and pride we have for our home and community,” said Gardnerville artist Beverly Caputo.

Proposed business tax for education will go to Legislature

A petition to create a business tax to fund education was upheld, the Nevada Supreme Court ruled Thursday, sending it to the 2013 Legislature for action.

Carson City, Washoe County health agencies receive grants to explore partnership

Health agencies in Carson City and Washoe County have each received a $125,000 two-year grant that will be used to explore ways to partner, otherwise known as "cross-jurisdictional sharing."

The Carson City Health and Human Services and Washoe County Health District are recipients of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grants that will aid in the mission of protecting and promoting health in both counties, according to a news release.
