Carson City Christmas tree collection update
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 01/02/2013 - 10:25amCarson City Public Works reports this morning that because of holiday staffing issues and, most recently, frozen equipment issues, Waste Management is running behind in picking up Christmas trees.
They are playing catch up this week and next. If you are concerned that you have been missed, please call Waste Management directly at (775) 887-0402.
Christmas tree drop boxes will be at the following locations through Friday:
- JC Penney Parking Lot
- North Town Plaza/Near Bully's
- Carson City Landfill, 3600 Flint Dr
- Capital Sanitation, 5560 Sheep Dr
NHP issues nearly 12,000 cell phone-related distracted driving traffic citations
Submitted by editor on Wed, 01/02/2013 - 8:57amTroopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol issued nearly 12,000 traffic citations to motorists observed talking, texting or reading non-voice communication while operating a motor vehicle on Nevada’s highways in 2012.
Thirty of the offenders last year received their second citation for the same offense with 25 of those witnessed on their phone for a third time and cited once more. In all, as of Dec. 26, 2012, there were 11,992 citations issued.

Hundreds attend memorial for 'The Waver' Ed Carlson

"He was about spreading kindness and goodwill," said Joanne Ferris. "And he will be missed."

Brown of northern Nevada first learned he had prostate cancer back in 1995. “I tell people who are diagnosed, there is no need to panic, although I certainly did, at least 52 times or more,” he said laughing. “I’ve learned this is something you can control and live with because it is manageable. “
Carson City sheriff reports stabbing victim at house party taken to hospital

A 22-year-old Carson City man was stabbed and suffered a puncture to the lungs in a fight that happened at a New Year's Eve house party on Rex Circle late Monday night, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong reports.
The man, Adam Gaudette, was flown by Care Flight and was at last report in stable condition, said Furlong. Arrested was Leo Reyes Jacinto, 33, who faces a charge of battery with a deadly weapon. He is being held on $30,000 bail.

NHP reports few DUI arrests during critical New Year's celebration hours
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 01/01/2013 - 8:40amMore than 275 traffic enforcement stops were made by Nevada Highway Patrol troopers on Northern Nevada highways in a 10-hour period from 7 pm Monday until 5 am Tuesday morning.
Only seven motorists, or roughly three percent, stopped during that timeframe were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Many of those motorists stopped were designated drivers for passengers riding in the vehicle who were celebrating the New Year and had already consumed alcohol.
