Holy moly, it’s going to be a busy weekend: busy and gorgeous out. A bowling tournament and the Comstock Shootout Soccer tournament have the hotels and motels busting at the seams. The Carson City Arts Initiative (CCAI) is delighted to present High School Pic[ks] 2 in the Community Development Building (the Brick) at 108 East Proctor Street in Carson City with 50 pieces of art by 41 students from four high schools, including Carson and Pioneer high schools.

The support received from the community of Carson City is enough to make people from all over the country want to relocate. Former students know there are no special funds available for high school clubs to organize a prom or enjoy interscholastic competition.

On Wednesday, April 19, the excitement of storytelling will be evident when local author William ‘Bill' Hill shares his craft and stories with members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club.

William Hill is a naturalized northern Nevadan, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana and a product of many places and stories. Bill has lived in numerous locales, including Prairie Village, KS, Bristol, TN, Dallas and Denton, TX, and in south and north Lake Tahoe, NV. Currently he creates from the foothills of the eastern Sierra.

The April 2017 and summer 2017 guests of the Resident Artist Program in Silver City will be Sue Mark and Bruce Douglas of Marksearch. A husband-wife artist team who describe themselves as “cultural researchers, creator of conversations, and locators of lost history,” they make interactive public projects that invite people to reflect upon their communities.

Living on his own since he was 17 years old, Adrian Barrera has learned a number of skills that have helped him personally, but at the same time has developed selfless human qualities that have enriched his young life.

A four-week arts marketing workshop series for Northern Nevada “Artrepreneurs” is taking aim at the cliché of the starving artist. The workshop promises to help visual artists, artisans, performing artists and even literary artists achieve business success as they follow their creative passion.

Silver City, Nevada - On Sunday, March 19th at 2pm, Danish journalist Peter Krogh Andersen will offer a talk at the Silver City School House (385 High Street) with a slide show from his trips, followed by a question and answer session with the audience. The event, which includes light refreshments, is being hosted by the Resident Artist Program in Silver City. The public is cordially invited to attend this free event.

Yerington High School’s Gabrielle Hunt has represented Lyon County at the Nevada Poetry Out Loud State Finals for three consecutive years. Now she’ll represent the state of Nevada at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C.

With spring and summer around the corner, job opportunities have begun to sprout up around Carson City and Northern Nevada. Job seekers and students are encouraged to take advantage of a spring job fair planned for Friday, March 17 at the Carson City Community Center.

Silver Springs, Nevada - The featured speaker for the March 9th Healthy Communities Coalition meeting will be Pediatric Thanatologist Emilio Parga, Founder and Executive Director of Solace Tree. He will speak about creating “grief friendly schools” that are equipped to be supportive of children and teens who are dealing with loss.

The public is invited to attend the breakfast meeting, which begins at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center.

Nevada County Arts Council presents the inaugural Sierra Poetry Festival bringing together an array of local, national and international poets and performers to kick off National Poetry Month on April 1, 2017. With a keynote address by California's Poet Laureate Dana Gioia, the day will be filled with readings, open mics, workshops, discussions, parties and youth voices.

Artwork by Sophie Scott of New Zealand will be on display at the Nevada State Legislative Building in Carson City during the 2017 Legislative session. Look for it on the third floor near Ways and Means. Sophie’s painting, based on an 1860s photograph of Silver City, was created while she was a resident artist in Silver City in 2015.

Silver City, Nevada - The Resident Artist Program in Silver City is happy to announce that in March we’ll have a visit from journalist Peter Krogh Andersen of Denmark. This is Peter’s 4th time crossing the U.S. Last year, he traveled across the U.S. interviewing people about the Presidential election, American health care, and other issues and publishing a number of features based on the interviews (find those articles in the Danish newspaper Kristeligt Dagblad and on his own site, A Dane Passed By.)

The Nevada Press Association is hosting "Iconic Nevada: Plein Air Paintings from around the State", a show and sale of works by Erik Holland. The show opens Saturday February 4, (1–6 pm) for the monthly Carson City wine walk. A special reception will be held the evening of Wednesday, February 8 (4–8 pm) to welcome the Nevada legislators to the 2017 session.

I know it's hard to think about summer whilst scraping ice off your windshield, but the Community Discount Registration Event for Epic Rides at the Firkin and Fox will have you blissfully dreaming of bike rides in June. It's family fun at the Carson Library's Movie Night: bring the kids down for Finding Dory. Jazz it up with the Shipleys at Living the Good Life. Digital artists, or aspiring ones, will find camaraderie at Wired Wednesday. This month's meeting at Paradise Salon Spa Wellness will cover the upcoming City Wide Film-making Competition.

It’s a great time to be a business student at Western Nevada College. Changes to WNC’s Business program are providing students with important community contacts, real-world training, marketable skills, online course offerings and the opportunity to transfer to a four-year business program as a junior.

Get over the mid-week hump with a visit to one of Carson City’s art exhibits. There’s nothing like a little beauty to make your day. Capital City Arts Initiative has a display at the court house, inside the Sierra Room at the Community Center, and inside the BRIC building by City Hall. Check out the exhibit at the Nevada Arts Council and the Nevada Artist Association’s featured artist inside the Carson Visitor Center. Carson City is awash with art, so go see what is making our valley beautiful.

The winter solstice is today: the shortest day and longest night of the year. I’m always happy to hear that because it means longer days are on their way. The holiday frenzy continues, so don’t miss out on those pictures with Santa. Red’s Old 395 will send you off with a complementary 4”x6” photo, and Santa’s Village at the Carson Mall is open all day. Local photographer Robin Travis is featured in the Backseat Gallery of Comma Coffee; head over tonight for an artist’s reception honoring her exhibit.

I used to pride myself on being a generalist. Being a Jane of all trades was a darn good survival mechanism when I was trying to make ends meet. I could do a little writing here. A little consulting here. And, believe me, I would consult on anything. I found comfort in this kitchen sink approach to life.

Saturday's drenching rain notwithstanding, playing in mud just got easier in Carson City with the opening of Ogres-Holm Pottery in the Carson Mall.

The pottery studio, learning center and gallery cut the ribbon Saturday at 1308 South Carson Street inside the Carson Mall.

As the idiom goes, those who can, do, and those who can't, teach.

Then there's Merrill and Jo Moore, who do both.

The Carson City couple learned to throw clay four years ago through a local studio, and now are ready to pass on what they've learned by opening their own pottery studio inside the Carson Mall.

75 years ago, the USS Nevada was one of the battleships trapped when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. She was the only battleship to get underway during the attack, and according to Naval historian Kermit (Kit) H. Bonner the ship was "the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal and depressing morning" for the United States. Today we remember those lost in that attack, and remember the history behind the battleship that is our battle born namesake. A special exhibit of USS Nevada artifacts, and a lecture on her history are free for all at the State Museum at 1 p.m.

The Brewery Arts Center (BAC) is proud to feature works by Carson City potter, jewelry maker and author Kym Maehl, PhD, CRC, CHT throughout the month of December at the Artisan Shop inside the Brewery Arts Center.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture has been awarded a $2 million U.S Food and Drug Administration grant that will be used to offer workshops, training and technical assistance to Nevada farmers to aid in prevention of produce-related food outbreaks.

After collecting as many pottery bowls as possible throughout the year, the local Empty Bowls Project is holding its annual fundraiser Friday, Dec. 2 at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Carson City to deliver a blow to hunger in the community.

We’ve just about made it. Time to grab the last of the ingredients from the grocery store and get ready for the big day tomorrow.
