More than 64,000 students are expected to gather this week in Indianapolis for the national Future Farmers of America convention, competing in a multitude of events, and Carson High School CTE student, Holly Strasser, 17, will be one of only 52 students to compete in extemporaneous speaking at the event.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is offering a workshop on “Starting a Food Business in Nevada” with video conferencing of the event to be held at the Carson City Extension office. Attendees will learn key considerations to creating and selling food items, such as jellies, baked goods, pickles and frozen produce.

The Capital City Arts Initiative, CCAI, will present a talk by Tom di Maria, Director of the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, Calif., this Tuesday, Sept. 13.

His illustrated talk, "Outside In", is next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series. The talk will take place at 7pm at the Community Development building [the Brick], 108 E Proctor St, Carson City. There will be an informal reception for di Maria preceding the event at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.

Luana Olsen, Director of the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, will be the featured speaker to the Leisure Hour Club as the Club opens its 121th year. She will explore the history of the Museum and share information on its current activities and workshops.

LYON COUNTY — This year the Comstock Youth Works program expanded to serve four of five Lyon County high schools and 80 teens from communities across Lyon County, with funding from a Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant through Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey.

The kids deserve some fun for surviving their first week back at school, and Carson City delivers. The first annual Northern Nevada Family Fun Day takes over Mills Park with music, a kids zone, activities, food, raffles, and much more. Check out the Bowling Blast Off at Carson Lanes for a Car Show, bowling specials, and fun. Once the sun sets, Washoe Lake State Park offers a basic astronomy lesson and some celestial viewing. Families unite Saturday at Mills Park in Carson City for the first-ever Northern Nevada Family Fun Day, a community event featuring live music, workshops, shopping, raffles, a Kids Zone, giveaways, raffles and more.

There will be rock climbing demonstrations, face painting, pirates, obstacle courses, a bubble station, music, a photo booth, ice cream, refreshments beginning at 11 a.m. and running until to 9 p.m.

Author and comedienne Kat Simmons will speak on her book, Kat’s Daily Cups in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, August 28, at 10:00 am.

Kat's Daily Cups is a collection of short stories about raising children, the love of animals, life's challenges, gratitude, inspiration and awakenings.

McFadden Plaza will be hopping tonight. Not only is there a Farmers Market late Wednesday afternoons, but Josh and Jenera have returned to the Firkin and Fox to host a weekly jam session.
