If you're living in the Carson City region, you know all you have to do is wait a few minutes to have the weather change on you. Welcome to Friday, Feb. 15, 2019 and the beginning of the President's Day weekend. Carson City schools are closed today and Monday for the holiday. Gusty winds and another round of snow is expected today so take notice and be careful on the roadways.
NHP: One northbound I-580 lane opened near Bowers Mansion after fatal Galena Bridge crash
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 02/14/2019 - 7:16pmUPDATE 8:40PM: The Nevada Highway Patrol reports one lane of northbound I-580 is now open north of the Bowers Mansion exit. Traffic is moving slowly past the scene of the fatal crash. NHP urges motorists to watch for first responders and drive with extreme caution.

UPDATE 8:06PM: Nevada Highway Patrol troopers remain on scene Thursday night at the fatal crash on the Galena Bridge. There are approximately 10-15 vehicles involved with one confirmed fatality. There is not an estimated time for reopening northbound I-580. NHP advises motorists to use alternate routes.

Northbound Interstate 580 at mile marker 12 in Washoe County near the Galena Bridge is closed Thursday night due to a fatal crash at the Bowers Mansion exit, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
Storms bring water to roadways, minor flooding in Douglas County

We have also seen water and minor debris on the roadways in many areas. Douglas County Emergency Management continues to survey the area along with Douglas County road crews and law enforcement.
Carson City retention basins fill from storms, snow on the way into Friday morning

A storm is coming Wednesday and Thursday which could potentially cause flooding for snow-clogged drainage areas, poor drainage areas, and small streams below 6000 feet, however no rivers have been predicted to flood at this time.

Rain will continue throughout the morning, changing to snow showers later this afternoon, which has prompted a Winter Weather Advisory for the lower valley areas such as Carson City and Carson Valley. Forecasters urge motorists not to travel into the Sierra today as several feet of heavy snow will impact roadways and travel.

With snow plow efforts underway and a warm-up from Mother Nature, it looks like the morning commute will be a slushy one. Carson City schools will operate today at normal start times. That all may change tomorrow though as a significant winter storm is expected to bring snow and rain to the valley and feet of snow to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra. Stay tuned.

Carson City area weather: Storms lined up to bring rain and snow to Sierra and lower valleys

Several feet of snow are possible above 8,000 feet with up to 2 feet of accumulation down to 6,000 feet in the Sierra. Periods of rain and snow are expected in the lower elevations of northeast California and western Nevada Wednesday through Thursday.
