With the window for safe motor travel over the Sierra closing, the National Weather Service says travelers may experience headaches on their return home from the Thanksgiving holiday as another winter storm is brewing and likely to arrive by late Saturday into Sunday.

As the last Nevada Day event on Saturday was winding down, the pleasantly warm weather the Carson City region has been experiencing for several days seems to have gone the way of the setting sun.

A strong cold front is pushing through western Nevada and the Carson City region Monday, bringing gusty winds and later, a chance for a few isolated thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.

Time: Meet at Hwy 50 Park and Ride, just west of the intersection of Hwy 395 S and Hwy 50 W, at 8:00am. We'll carpool to Incline Village to walk on the recently-opened multi-use pathway: Tahoe East Shore Trail.

Where: The three-mile Tahoe East Shore Trail, on the south side of Incline Village. We will park at Tunnel Creek and then walk south towards the lookout at Memorial Point. The entire trail is paved.

Thunderstorms bring lightning strikes around Carson City

A series of thunderstorms moved into the Carson City and Carson Valley area Wednesday afternoon and evening bringing lightning and a few brush fires to the region. As of Wednesday 8:20 p.m. the storms had moved out of the Carson City, Carson Valley area. More thunderstorms are expected Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Carson City Fire Department: Rain knocks down small brush fires started by downed power line

Carson City Fire Department was called Wednesday evening to the area of Heaven Hill Way and Imus Road in north Carson City for a report of a brush fire. The fire was eventually extinguished by rain.

Lightning touches off fast moving wildfire in Jacks Valley

UPDATE 5:52PM: According to Douglas County's Facebook page: "Things appear to be settling down out on Jacks Valley due to a little help from the rain. Residents are still being asked to remain aware!" Also noteworthy is the brush unit that Carson City sent to fight the fire, has since returned to Carson City.

According to CCFD Chief Sean Slamon, there were no fires burning in Kings Canyon. The Fire Department received calls, checked it out, and the smoke was drift smoke from the Jacks Valley Fire. CCFD did knock down a fire at residence on Muldoon Street in town. The small fire was caused by a lightning strike on the roof of the residence.

UPDATE 5:39PM: According to Douglas County Dispatch Jack’s Valley road has been reopened, and the Record Courier in Douglas County reported via twitter that forward progress has stopped with an assist from the rain.

A trough pushing moisture into the West Coast will bring a chance of widespread showers and thunderstorms to the Carson City region Wednesday and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

The day we arrived, they had a wild fire that started at 200 acres and by the next day it was over 10,000. The National Weather Service is tracking a series of strong thunderstorms throughout the region Thursday afternoon. Doppler radar shows thunderstorms developing north into Washoe County and south of US-50 and east of the Sierra and Tahoe Basin.

Tempest on the tee box – Rain suspends play at the Barracuda

Reno hasn’t seen measurable precipitation since May. That is, until the Barracuda Championship began. Rain and lightning suspended round one on Thursday, and several violent deluges Friday afternoon further delayed and then suspended round two.

Weather Service: Showers and thunderstorms possible, heat to build over weekend

UPDATE 730PM: The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Douglas County in western Nevada and Alpine County in Calif. Thunderstorms producing heavy rain were reported across the Carson Range west of Foothill Road. Flash flooding is expected. Rock slides, debris flows are possible. The warning is until 8:30 p.m.
