Carson City area weather: Strong thunderstorms experienced throughout region
The National Weather Service is tracking a series of strong thunderstorms throughout the region Thursday afternoon. Doppler radar shows thunderstorms developing north into Washoe County and south of US-50 and east of the Sierra and Tahoe Basin.
Heavy rain, nickel sized hail, cloud-to-ground lightning and winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with these storms, according to the weather service in Reno. This development is expected to continue into the early evening hours before the storms begin to dissipate.
Locations impacted include Reno, Carson City, Pyramid Lake, Lahontan Reservoir, Incline Village, Gerlach, Virginia City, Sparks, Fernley, Dayton, Silver Springs, Spooner Summit, Wingfield Springs, Northwest Reno, Spanish Springs, Golden Valley, Virginia Peak, Carson City Airport, Verdi-Mogul, New Washoe City and Hidden Valley.
These storms may intensify. The weather service advises to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.
During a thunderstorm, the weather services advises to seek shelter inside a sturdy structure and stay away from windows. Hikers and campers should seek shelter in a vehicle if possible.
