The things people do to trees sometimes horrify me. Topped trees or those with hacked instead of pruned limbs; trees planted under power lines; and trees left without water in long ago removed lawns are a few of my pet peeves. Improper staking is another.

Carson High School hosted their annual Academic Letter Awards Ceremony Monday night. The ceremony began like most of its kind, except this year’s special guest speaker was Jim Wilson, our second congressional district judge.

The majority of Wilson’s speech was about the struggles his fathers encountered with a lack of education. He continued to explain that education can lead to opportunities that would otherwise be unobtainable without the proper knowledge. The story concluded with the advice to do what you love and a congratulations to all of the recipients and their parents.

With the holiday season here the Carson City Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the community of some precautions that will reduce the chances of becoming a victim. While many of us will be shopping for the best deal on Christmas presents criminals are planning ways of how to take advantage of us while we are distracted. Many of the tips provided involve common sense and can be practiced year round.

We are a very generous community and can fall victim to several scams that are ongoing, not just in Carson City but across the nation.

He was a talk radio host on station KKOH in Reno for five years as well. He was fired due to outrage over comments he made to the effect that the United States should not have such a strong relationship with Israel.[1]

A well-traveled, 72-year-old World War II veteran is set to make a triumphant return Tuesday at the annual Veterans Day parade in Reno. A remodeled 1942 Dodge WC-54 3/4-Ton Army Ambulance, owned by the Department of Veterans Affairs and refurbished by the Nevada Army Guard, is set to make its first public appearance in years at the parade that begins at 11 a.m. on Virginia Street.

Silver State Charter Schools needs the help of the public at their next Governing Body Meeting this Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Mark Twain Room at Silver State, 788 Fairview Drive, Carson City.

Objective and Outcome: This school is in need of the public’s assistance to bring this Board into lawful compliance. A status this Board has not enjoyed since May of 2013.

How the Public can help: We need public volunteers to attend this coming Tuesday’s meeting which will be held at the Silver State Charter School in the “Mark Twain” room.

The mission and main goal of the FREEZE DON'T SHOOT organization is to bring awareness and resolution to the deadly encounters of family pets with law enforcement officers. This means training and proper containment of our pets, especially when in an emergency situation. We know our dogs personalities and can properly determine when our dog is a true threat.

Take a moonlit walk while learning the history of Washoe Valley on Wednesday, Oct. 8. This is a one-mile round-trip hike to the gazebo on the Deadman’s Creek Trail. The hike is limited to 30 participants. Reservations are required.

Visitors to Fallen Leaf and Meeks Bay campgrounds at Lake Tahoe must put now their food and refuse in proper storage lockers and dumpsters beginning Wednesday, according to a decision by the U.S. Forest Service. The measure is intended to stop prevent human-bear conflict.

The Forest Order requires the use of facility provided dumpsters and food lockers locked to animal entry at the specified recreation sites. Visitors who elect not to comply with the Forest Order may be subject to a violation notice.

A 36-year-old Carson City man was jailed Saturday night, admitting to using a handgun to fire shots outside his Dori Way residence. Bladimir Belerra-Estrada faces a felony charge of possessing a firearm without proper citizenship status, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of discharging a firearm in a residential area.

The U.S. Forest Service, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and California Public Utilities Commission have released a final environmental document for the electrical line upgrade project proposed by California Pacific Electric Company, now known as Liberty Utilities, in the North Lake Tahoe area.

A Carson City man was arrested early Saturday morning on a felony home invasion charge after he allegedly broke a window of a day care center, entered the facility and ate a bag of potato chips, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Nathan Richardson, 32, was found inside an East Telegraph day care center after deputies were called at 3:52 a.m. on a report of glass being broken in the area. Arriving officers noticed a man inside the day care center in the kitchen area, and the broken window. The man was eating potato chips near the refrigerator, according to the arrest report.

UPDATE: The Nevada Highway Patrol with other agencies assisting is temporarily holding the Burning Man participants from entering this event due to rain that has made it difficult for vehicles to travel into the Playa. NHP is asking that participants do not try and travel out to the Burning Man area until notified that the roads will be open and passable.

The environment you are surrounded by at work can lift you up, propel you forward, pull you down, or trigger feelings of being stuck. In some organizational cultures, a cycle perpetuates itself that is very similar to abuse. What do you do if your organization is stuck in such a cycle? You get therapy.

As a leader, there are a few ways you can do this without pulling in an outside facilitator. Although, if things have gotten to the point where the needle can’t move with internal efforts alone, a facilitator may be necessary.

A 50-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday on a felony charge of possession of a stolen vehicle after he had been stopped and then took off running from officers before being caught, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

James Dean Anderson was taken into custody at 4:38 p.m. in the 1500 block of Continental Drive. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of obstructing a police officer and driving on a revoked license for DUI.

Many celebrations are scheduled statewide in the month of August. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Aug. 1 through Aug. 14.

A proposal by the U.S. Forest Service to require food storage and refuse disposal in developed recreation sites on public land in the Lake Tahoe Basin has been determined to have no significant impact and now enters into a 45-day comment period for anyone who objects.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit issued the draft decision Wednesday for the proposed Forest Order.

Because bears are attracted to anything edible or scented, improper storage of human food and other scented items and improper disposal of refuse is a leading cause of human-bear conflict.
