Hot weather to sweep Carson City region this week; temps in 90s with thunderstorms possible

After seasonal weather over the past few weeks brought periods of gusty wind, some valley showers and a few inches of snow to the Sierra, the Carson City region will be riding into a late spring heat wave this week, with daytime temperatures hot enough to force on those cooling fans and air conditioners.

Tuesday evening made for spectacular photography as the sun was setting throughout western Nevada and Sierra. These photos of the wave of standing lenticular clouds were taken by Nicole Hooper in Dayton. The first three show the range of the cloud formations and the fourth photo was taken Wednesday morning, where Hooper notes "this morning was pretty too."

Cool, showery weather, with periods of steadier precipitation, will continue into the Memorial Day weekend. However, snow levels are forecast to rise above 7,500 feet from Wednesday evening onward for diminishing snowfall impacts in the Sierra, according to the National Weather Service.

An unusual and persistent weather pattern will send cold Pacific storms into the Carson City region Wednesday through early next week, a pattern that is more typical of early March rather than late May.

For Carson City and throughout western Nevada we can expect periods of rain and strong gusty winds and for the Sierra, heavy wet snow starting at around 8,000 feet and dropping to 6,000 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

The following is from the Sheriff's Office: Due to anticipated cold, wet, windy weather conditions Carson City Sheriff’s Office regrets to inform the community of the cancellation of the Cops and Kids Safe Streets Party which was scheduled for Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. According to the National Weather Service a slight chance of showers and potential for wind is predicted. Unfavorable weather conditions may cause significant disruption in the planned outdoor activities. The event cannot be relocated indoors as accommodations are limited. Staff of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office wishes to thank those interested in attending and appreciates the community’s support.

The 16th annual Cops and Kids Safe Streets Party, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office, will be held Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office administration building, 911 East Musser Street.

Public safety, awareness and community are at the center of this popular annual spring event where the theme is “Cops and Kids: Where the Community and Law Enforcement Come Together.”
