The Ron Wood Family Resource Center is searching for candidates to serve on its Board of Directors.
Established in 1995, the Carson City-based Ron Wood Family Resource Center is the local resource for services, information and referrals for children and families in our community. It is a 501c3 non-profit agency.

The Sierra Nevada Health Center in Carson City will be offering reduced cost flu vaccines on Dec. 21 and Dec. 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. The reduced cost of the flu vaccine is $15. They are accepting new patients who would like to receive the flu vaccine. They are also offering pediatric immunizations on Dec. 20 and Dec. 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. at 3325 Research Way. No appointment is necessary.

It is with deep appreciation for your help, encouragement, readership and support over the past three years that I am tasked with announcing the suspension of operations at the Nevada News Bureau.

In short, we have been unable to secure the funds we would need to continue operating in 2013. Such is life, sometimes, in the non-profit world.

A petition representing over 213 concerned Carson City constituents (including 8 business owners) and 1661 other Nevada residents was presented to the Carson City Board of Supervisors on Thursday, December 6.

The petition asks the Board to join over 300 cities and 11 states in passing a resolution that supports a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission decision which opened the flood gates for unlimited outside spending in all political elections.

Prestigious snow carvers from around the world will call North Lake Tahoe home February 8-12, 2013 for the region’s first-ever Carve Tahoe competition, with the judging take place February 13, 2013.

The weeklong international snow sculpture contest is specifically geared for spectators who will view firsthand 20-ton blocks of pure snow shaped and carved into breathtaking masterpieces. The competing teams are the best of the best – selected from the event’s top applicants and representing more than 20 countries.

CARSON CITY – A Nevada family of four with a median income of $65,212 will see a nearly 5 percent tax hike next year if a collection of tax breaks are not renewed by Congress as it deals with the so-called “fiscal cliff”, according to a new report by the Tax Foundation.

The 4.92 percent tax increase as a percentage of the median income ranks Nevada 29^th among the states in the higher rates they would pay, the study determined.

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation at Lake Tahoe has opened registration for the 2012 – 2013 competitive and development ski and snowboard programs. With a variety of options from the One-Day Program to the Full-Time Competitive Program, the Foundation has something for all ages and levels of skiers and riders. The Carson Tahoe Health Foundation is pleased to announce net proceeds of over $50,000 for their 2nd Annual Carson City HopeFest fundraiser. This is an increase over last year’s net earnings of $37,000 and like last year, one hundred percent of these proceeds go towards local cancer patients seeking treatment in Carson City. Currently, the CTH Foundation is the only non-profit organization focused on supporting Carson area cancer patients with living expenses.

The environmental non-profit Tahoe Fund presented a $27,500 check to the California Tahoe Conservancy yesterday to allow completion of the Lower Blackwood Creek and Eagle Rock Restoration Project, a critical creek restoration and trailhead project on Lake Tahoe’s west shore. In a shining example of public-private partnership, the money was donated by the Tahoe Fund’s private donors at its annual Founders Circle Summer Dinner in August to help aid the state’s leading Tahoe conservation agency in its efforts to improve lake clarity and recreational opportunities in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

A small South Tahoe lodge is stepping up big by committing 10 percent of its Monday profits over the course of a year to one charity. The Avalon Lodge, a 20-room boutique property is launching its “Make a Difference Mondays” and inviting the public to nominate and vote to select the non-profit organization.

As of September 1, 2012 patients will have the option to access these services in Carson City through an agreement with Carson Medical Group and Cure 4 The Kids Foundation.

The Hyacinth Preservation Society must raise $5,000 to keep our organization operating for the next year. Your donation will pay for food, medical expenses, toys and other expenses we incur in the upkeep of the birds that we rescue. Recently, we received an African Grey that has plucked nearly all of her feathers out.

Carson City, NV—Carson High School football players will receive new helmets, shoulder pads and other equipment this year thanks to the generosity shown during the annual “Kick-Off Dinner” recently held at Carson Nugget.

At the start of each season, the Carson High Athletic Department and the Carson High Football Boosters raise money to support the program. This year the Carson Nugget provided the venue and split the revenue generated through the sale of alcohol to help the group generate income.

The University of Nevada, Reno, in cooperation with the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office, has sent a team of archaeologists to excavate the site of one of Nevada’s most important early hospitals. St. Mary Louise Hospital in Virginia City opened in 1876 and served the mining community until the early 20th century.

While the BAC is open to other artists and arts organizations, as well as the general public for collaborations and to rent their facilities, a resident status may be offered to organizations who demonstrate sound business practices, financial strength, the ability to fill seats and, above all, artistic prowess. Both organizations will retain their independence and tax exempt, nonprofit status.
