Focus on Carson photography banner to be installed Wednesday at Curry and Telegraph

The Carson City Arts & Culture Coalition will install its Focus on Carson photography banner on the Hop & Mae Adams Foundation construction site fence at Curry and Telegraph streets this Wednesday, June 22, at 10:30 a.m.

The banner displays 20 photographs taken in Carson City by local artists. The public is invited to attend and help hang the banner.

Arts at the Heart 2016 Celebrates brave new communities across Nevada

Designed specifically for teams of local arts groups and “non-arts” civic agencies and organizations, the Nevada Arts Council’s Arts@theHeart 2016 focuses on creating vibrant, equitable and healthy communities throughout Nevada. Local arts leaders will convene to engage in conversation, networking and collective community action planning through the arts, June 9 and 10 at the Siena Hotel.

Toni Thompson has long had a love for the American West and its history. It shows both in the decor of her retail store and in the building she rents.

Thompson, owner of Eagle Mountain Trading Post at 110 S. Curry Street in Carson City, said she couldn't be happier running her business out of the historic structure that once served as a freight depot, livery and Overland Stage stop back in the early days of the Nevada state capital.

As we are starting another year of Empty Bowls in Carson City, we wanted to take a minute and ask for help ... early on.
We are currently collecting bisquited, unglazed and undecorated handmade bowls. We are also seeking cone 6 white clay, kiln firings and other materials.

One of the goals stated by Carson City staff is to have this project complete in time for the Nevada Day parade. We should, however, keep our chief consideration foremost: “Let's do it Right.”

Third Annual Empty Bowls Carson City Event to help raise hunger awareness

The third annual Empty Bowls Carson City event to help raise hunger awareness, will be Friday, Dec. 4 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is part of the Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights and takes place inside the First Presbyterian Church, 306 W. Musser St., the site of the second tree lighting event of the evening.

There will be a raffle for dozens of locally made art pieces and other merchandise, generously donated to the cause. Demonstrations on a potter's wheel will also be occurring to show you how bowls are made.

Empty Bowls Carson City gives everyone the chance to choose a bowl made by local artists and fellow citizens for a minimum $12 donation that includes comes all you can eat soup generously donated by many local restaurants.

As part of the citywide music festival, Jazz & Beyond, the Capital City Arts Initiative will host artists selling their art, 5-7pm, in the Carson City Community Center lobby, Tuesday, August 18 prior to the 7pm "Music of Motown" concert. Local Works of Art Professional watercolorist and arts instructor, Dana Childs is embarking upon a major painting project that includes creating a series of watercolors of the Sierra Nevada as well as supporting a local youth art painting project in our local town of Genoa if the initial goal is met.

Join the Carson City Classic Cinema Club for our monthly viewing! Our theme for Tuesday, April 7 viewing is the religious epic "The Agony and the Ecstasy."
The 1965 film, starring Charlton Heston as Michelangelo and Rex Harrison as Pope Julius II, deals with their conflict over the painting of the Sistine Chapel.

The club meets in the back room at Red's Old 395 Grill (1055 S. Carson Street in Carson City) at 6:30 PM on the first Tuesday of every month.

Men of Worth was formed in 1986 by Scotsman Donnie Macdonald and Irishman James Keigher who came together to perform Irish and Scottish folk music, combining traditional and contemporary styles.

The Carson City Classic Cinema Club's February film will be the 1953 drama "Indiscretion of an American Wife". The screening will be held at Red's Old 395 Grill. Everyone is invited to show up early, to take advantage of the happy hour specials.

Trivia games and film discussion will begin at 6:30 p.m.; the film will start at 7 p.m.

General admission is $5, $3 for students and seniors. The showing is free for members.

St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City to host Dec. 6 Art Faire on the Comstock

The region's finest Nevada-made art will be featured Saturday, Dec. 6 at St. Mary’s Art Center in Virginia City with its first Artists and Artisans Art Faire on the Comstock.

Not only will all galleries be filled with art, the entire building will be full of local artists and creative folk from all over the Comstock region, showing and selling their work. The faire will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The art works range in style, medium, size and price from $5 to $8,000, so there will be something for everyone’s holiday shopping budget.

St. Marys Art and Retreat Center in Virginia City to hold Saturday reception

St. Marys Arts and Retreat Center in Virginia City will host a reception for its art show “a winter tonic” on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014 from 1 to 4 p.m. The reception will feature the work of Danish artist Nes Lerpa, Megan Berner, Jessica White and Dusty Roads artists.

Folk musicians Paula Frazer, Jacob Aranda, and David Cuetter will perform. In addition, the exhibit will include the best work from students in the Reno High School Advanced Art class. Kelsey Rolling, Emily Jiang, and Tyler Hart are students of Lauren Gandolfo.

Art doll maker Christine Shively-Benjamin of Carson City will be among the 30 artists from Northern Nevada featured at the 20th annual Artisan Show and Sale in Reno Nov. 7 and 8 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Sixteen pieces of original art will also be given away.

According to Judy Carlson, one of the show coordinators, the juried show features returning artists and new artists displaying a variety of techniques and media.

Grand celebration of 150th birthday of Nevada and Diwali Festival by TACH

TACH (Traditional Association for Cultural Harmony) International, Inc. a nonprofit organization celebrated “150th Birthday of Nevada and Festival of Diwali” on Oct 18th, 2014 @ Laxalt Auditorium, (UNR), Reno with the collaboration of Indo-American artists & Community. The concert present an Indian Dance, Indian Classical Kachappi Veena, Violin and Sarod.

Empty Bowls Carson City Glazing Day! Free family fun at Carson City Pottery

Local artists, young and old are donating handmade bowls for a fund raising event that will be held during the Capital Tree Lighting ceremony on December 5th, 2013.

Restaurants are providing the soup and bread that will fill our Empty Bowls. For a minimum donation of $12, you may select one of the bowls and enjoy a warm winter meal to launch the holiday season. The artisan bowl is yours to keep as a reminder that there are empty bowls in our community. There will also be an art auction at the event!

Carson City artist takes his project to Burning Man

With the Burning Man counterculture festival taking place this week on the Black Rock Playa, many local artists are taking part in the event. Jake Smith of Carson City returns for a fourth time and talks about the project he's worked on for the festival.

From October 23-26, the Nevada Land Trust is hosting a free benefit art show, "Art of Conservation - Open Spaces and Special Spaces" in the three galleries of the Wilbur May Museum, Rancho San Rafael Regional Park at 1595 N. Sierra St., Reno. The Galleries will be open Thursday 2pm-4pm, Friday-Saturday 10am-4pm, Sunday 12pm-3pm, with a closing reception 12pm-2pm.
