Easy Walk Sponsored by Muscle Powered to Kings Canyon Trail

Meet in the parking area on Kings Canyon Road just west of Kingsview Way. Water and closed-toed shoes required. Easy Walk Program are walks of 1 to 2 miles in length with none or negligible elevation gain, and frequently paved or smooth paths.

If it rains or snows, meet at the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center (MAC) at 1860 Russell Way.

Carson City weather update: Thunderstorms developing in Western Nevada, Eastern Sierra

The National Weather Service in Reno advises that isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms have begun to develop Tuesday afternoon through the Western Nevada basin and range into Carson City. Lightning strikes were being reported throughout the area as well as rain showers in Carson City.

The question of the day at the Nevada State Museum is ‘who.’ Jenni Jeffers, a wildlife biologist, will answer that question at this month’s lecture focusing on the nearly dozen species of owls that call Nevada home. Those over 55 are in for a treat: the Carson City Hot Springs is offering free admission to their outdoor pools today. It may be a nice enough evening for patio karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, but if not, there is plenty of room inside for everyone that wants to take a turn at the mic.

Carson City Fire Chief: Evacuations lifted in Voltaire Fire

UPDATE 7:15PM: All evacuations have been lifted in the Voltaire Canyon Fire, said Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon. Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center estimates the fire to be around 150 acres.

UPDATE 6:29PM: Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon said conditions are looking better this evening, with the fire around 70 to 75 percent contained. There is not acreage estimate yet but it is likely around 100 acres and probably less than 200 acres, he said.
“Around 100 firefighters are on scene battling the blaze as well as two airplanes and two helicopters. We have released some resources now so they can go to other fires in the region.”
Evacuations remain in place for now in Voltaire Canyon and Carson Colony areas. The cause of the fire is believed to be a lightning strike.

UPDATE 6 PM: Carson City Fire Department Chief Sean Slamon addresses Tuesday's fire in a video here. The main concern now is the winds and terrain which is making containment difficult.

UPDATE 5:30PM: The evacuation at Galaxy Theater off of Curry Street has been lifted, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

UPDATE 5:03PM: From Carson City Fire Department: Crews are staging to protect the homes and businesses west of Curry Street. For those outside of the immediate fire area, but nearby, you might consider what documents, medications, and valuables you would prioritize in an evacuation. There is currently 0 percent containment, winds are still erratic. Those evacuated from the Carson Colony are advised to go to the Carson Colony Gym.

UPDATE 4:53PM: From the Carson City Fire Department: No structures have been lost and efforts are concentrated on strucutre protection north of Koontz and west of Curry. Additional resources are continuting to arrive and the fire is estmated to be approximately 100 acres.

Care Flight called after bicycle accident at Kings Canyon

Carson City Fire Department dispatched a medical helicopter to Carson Middle School following an accident Tuesday afternoon involving a bicycle rider in the Kings Canyon area.

A 37-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 1400 block of North Edmonds Drive Friday afternoon for suspicion of multiple felony offenses including burglary and grand larceny, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Park across the street from Longview Way on Kings Canyon Road. Closed-toed shoes and water are required. Bring a friend and/or friendly dogs. Hats, sunscreen and walking sticks recommended.

Muscle Powered Easy Hike program are hikes of between 2 to 4 miles in length, often with some elevation gain (no more than 500') and can be on a paved path, smooth wide trail, or single track. The hikes will usually be of approximately 1 1/2 duration.

Carson City firefighters knock down brush fire in Kings Canyon area

UPDATE 7:31PM: A brush fire in the Kings Canyon area was knocked down quickly early Friday evening, burning around a half acre, said Carson City Fire Department Chief Sean Slamon. There was no damage to structures in the fire. The cause is under investigation.

It’s all hands on deck for the Deputy Howell Memorial Music Festival; a meeting for the volunteers is tonight at Battle Born Harley Davidson. The monthly Mile High Jazz Band show moves from Comma Coffee to the stage in McFadden Plaza, so it’s a free poetry and jazz show for all. The Tahoe Mountain Miler running club will be hosting a training run for the up coming Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs. This training run will take place Sunday June 11th starting at 7:00AM at the Western Nevada College parking lot in Carson City.

The trails are are permitted by Carson City Parks and Recreation & Open Space Department and the Humbolt-Toiyabe USFS.

Emergency crews called to rollover crash in upper Kings Canyon

UPDATE 9:45AM: Three teenage females were the victims in the rollover accident in upper Kings Canyon on Monday night, according to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. Two were taken by Care Flight with non-life threatening injuries and one, also with non-life-threatening injuries, was taken to the hospital.

UPDATE 9:50PM: Care Flight, which landed near the rollover accident in upper Kings Canyon, has made contact with three people, according to dispatch. The RAVEN helicopter dispatched from Washoe County has been canceled.

Carson City Friday morning flood update and road closures

Carson City Emergency Operations Center reports: Kings Canyon Road west of the Longview intersection is now open. Water and debris continue to cover the roadway, please use caution if driving on the road.

Breaking News: All Carson City schools canceled due to flooding

With flooding reported at some of the school campuses and around town, the Carson City School District announced just before 8 a.m. that all schools now CLOSED Friday due to heavy flooding.

Late last night the district had announced that schools were on a two-hour delay. However due to the nature of flooding overnight, the district decided to close all campuses. See the photos and video by Jeff Moser below.

It’s going to be a great Tuesday, Carson City. Parks and Recreation sponsors their weekly ‘Easy Walk’ along Kings Canyon Trail. Although, if the rain continues to fall, the walk will take place at our new Multi-Purpose Athletic Center. Capital City Art Initiative celebrates the artists of Western Nevada College this evening, and then welcomes Phyllis Shafer for an illustrated discussion of her work. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club shows off a young Elizabeth Taylor tonight in the 1954 romantic drama ‘The Last Time I Saw Paris.’
