Ceremony opens Carson City Motor Officer Training Challenge, downtown festival

Motorcycle patrol riders from Nevada and California were welcomed by dignitaries Saturday for the opening of the 12th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge in downtown Carson City.

The event brings dozens of law enforcement officers to Carson City annually to compete in team riding and obstacle courses along Carson Street. Saturday's events will include 2 man tethered riding, 4 man team relay, slow ride, an obstacle course and last man standing.

Carson City courts implement new misdemeanor treatment court for drug addicts

A new drug treatment process through Carson City's court system will begin with its first hearing July 2 at the Carson City Courthouse. The goal is to send addicts, especially those who are young, to substance abuse rehabilitation and counseling programs.

Celebrity Waiters Make FISH Celebration a Success

FISH, also known as Friends in Service Helping, would like to thank all the celebrity waiters and their guests who made the 2015 Have a Heart Celebration on May 16 a huge success. Community members raised over $30,000 for the human services organization. All of the donations will be used to fund FISH’s programs for the homeless and hungry, including a food bank, a family dining room, two homeless shelters, and a clinic.

Carson City Court Clerk, Little League coach jailed on suspicion of statutory sexual seduction

A 25-year-old Carson City Justice Court Clerk and Carson Little League coach has been arrested on felony charges, including statutory sexual seduction involving a 15-year-old male, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed Saturday.

Arrested was Armando Navarro. He was taken into custody for suspected statutory sexual seduction and committing certain sexual acts in public, both felonies, and indecent or obscene exposure, a gross misdemeanor. As of Saturday afternoon, Naravarro had made arrangements to post bail.

Teen pedestrian in critical condition after accident with vehicle on South Carson Street

UPDATE: From Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong: At 3:03 p.m., the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, fire and ambulance responded to a report of a vehicle vs pedestrian accident at the intersection of South Carson Street and 10th Street. On arrival, it was learned that a 13-year-old Carson Middle School student was crossing Carson Street in the crosswalk when she was struck by a north bound vehicle. The student was determined to be in critical condition and care flighted to Renown.

Hundreds show for 2015 Carson City Sheriff's Office Cops and Kids Open House

After 12 years, the annual Carson City Sheriff's Office Cops and Kids open house Saturday was among the biggest yet, with dozens of families and hundreds of children taking part in games, contests and information events well into the late morning and into the afternoon.

The popular community event is aimed at children of all ages and their families as a way introduce public safety agencies, especially law enforcement, to them. The event is part family carnival without the rides, and part educational experience, where music, food, contests, songs and dancing are the orders of the day.

Suspect caught trying to escape home near Roop Street

UPDATE: 6:15PM: An arrest has been made after a man had eluded Carson City sheriff's deputies in the area of Hawaii Circle. Andre Franklin, 21, was taken into custody at around 5 p.m. He was found in a home a few houses down on Hawaii Circle from where he was originally thought to be hiding. He was discovered by an officer trying to escape through a backyard.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong released the following information: At 1:37 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic battery report at the 2000 block of Hawaii Circle in Carson City.

Carson City Sheriff Says Early Childhood Education Could Reduce Crime

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says he supports Governor Brian Sandoval's plan to increase funding for early childhood education. Sandoval's proposed budget includes $882 million in education reforms, like Pre-K and full-day kindergarten. Furlong says he supports the programs because it could improve Nevada's graduation rates, and that could reduce incarceration rates.

Seeliger Elementary lockdown lifted after man with pajamas seen earlier leaving playground

Update 1:40 p.m.: The lock down at Seeliger Elementary has been lifted. Carson City School Superintendent Richard Stokes said the sheriff's office was contacted when the man was on school grounds. Several officers responded, going through neighborhoods where the man was seen leaving school property, going over a fence.

With further consultation with the sheriff's office, the school was placed in a lockdown with admittance, which closes the school off for children, keeping them indoors but being able to go from classroom to classroom, said Stokes.

Carson City 911 dispatchers recognized this week as the unseen first, first responders

While first responders on a fire, accident or crime scene are deputies, ambulance and fire department personnel, it is 911 dispatch who are the lifeline between the victim and responding agencies. Tucked in a high-tech facility all their own, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Communications 911 Center responds 24-hours a day, seven days a week, day or night to crisis phone calls.

Suspect in Carson City domestic battery faces multiple felony charges, $146K bail

Carson City Sheriff’s detectives, working closely with the Carson City District Attorney’s Office, filed an arrest report for Jordan Webber, the 22-year-old suspect in Tuesday's domestic battery at a Dori Way home.

Webber faces several felony charges after he allegedly beat a woman with a rock, released a pit bull on responding officers and then stabbed himself in the neck. The victim in the battery was treated for non life-threatening injuries and is doing better, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

UPDATE 1:05PM: A 22-year-old Carson City man faces felony charges after he allegedly beat a pregnant woman with a rock, released a pit bull on responding officers and then stabbed himself in the neck. The victim in the battery was being treated for non life-threatening injuries, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The suspect, Jordan Webber, was flown by Care Flight to Renown Medical Center in Reno. He was to appear in Carson City court today on domestic battery charges, said Furlong. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office responded Tuesday morning, 11:25 a.m. to a report of a violent domestic battery actively taking place at the 2300 block of Dori Way in northeast Carson City.

The hysterical reporting female informed dispatchers that a man was attacking a pregnant female with a knife. She believed the victim was being stabbed repeatedly and her throat had been “slit” in the back yard of the residence.

Child falls off vehicle on Dori Way, flown by Care Flight in very serious condition; driver a family member

UPDATE 1:32PM: From Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong: At 12:09 p.m., the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Fire/Paramedics responded to the corner of Dori Way and Ester Circle to a reported juvenile pedestrian hit by a vehicle. Once on scene, officers determined that the juvenile was an 11-year-old Hispanic male and the driver of the vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, had left the scene.

Lockdown lifted at Fritsch Elementary; threat to school made after most students had left

UPDATE 9:10PM: From the Carson City Sheriff's Office: Wednesday's lockdown of Fritsch Elementary School was a result of a threatening phone message received by staff at the school. Although there were no classes in session at the time, many latchkey students and faculty were on the school grounds. The students and staff on the campus were placed in a procedural in-place lockdown while Deputy Sheriff's performed a room by room search to insure the safety of everyone.

Our appreciation to all of the parents and family members who patiently awaited outside the school while the staff and officers completed the search.

Details emerge on female body found buried in shallow grave near Carson City cemetery

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said Friday that the body wrapped in a sleeping bag and discovered Tuesday by a hiker off trail by Lone Mountain Cemetery was a woman, who may have been associated with a local homeless population. Photos of the woman's belongings have been provided.

UPDATE 7:48PM: A mostly decomposed body inside of a sleeping bag was removed from a shallow two-foot grave on Lone Mountain, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. Details regarding the identity, gender and age are pending an autopsy scheduled for Wednesday. No other details are available at this time.

UPDATE 4:48PM: The body found by a hiker Tuesday morning off a hiking trail in the hills above Lone Mountain Cemetery has been removed and an autopsy will be performed Wednesday morning, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Arrests made in connection with shots fired in east Carson City neighborhood

UPDATE 8:30PM: Among those arrested in connection with the Tuesday morning Carson City shooting in the 1400 block of North Edmonds are: Christopher Maddox, 22, believed to be the only alleged shooter, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Sheriff: Suspects in casino robbery remain at large, considered armed and dangerous

Two masked men who robbed a casino in the 300 block of East Winnie Lane in Carson City at around 9 p.m. Thursday night remain at large and are considered armed and dangerous, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Two completely masked male suspects entered the Slotworld Cabaret casino where one of the men pointed a .22 caliber pistol at two casino employees. The robbery occurred while the employees were preparing to close the business for the evening, said Furlong.

Search and Rescue operation at Kings Canyon; man says he's been stuck for three days

UPDATE 1:35PM: A man stuck up Kings Canyon has been rescued, according to Carson City dispatch. The man is said to be suffering from cold exposure and was treated by a Carson City fire and rescue ambulance team at the Nevada Department of Transportation substation at the top of Spooner Summit. He was taken to the hospital.

A search and rescue operation is underway this afternoon in the Kings Canyon area. According to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, the man told dispatch that he has been stuck up in the canyon with a vehicle for three days and says he may have frostbite.

Carson City Search and Rescue team respond to stuck vehicle up Kings Canyon

UPDATE 10:38PM: Two people were rescued from near the top of Kings Canyon late Friday night, including an 81-year-old woman, after their vehicle became stuck on a trail earlier in the evening. Carson City Search and Rescue reports the rescue part of the operation was completed at 10:35 p.m. with efforts continuing late Friday night to get the vehicle down from the canyon.
An ambulance was called to evaluate the 81-year-old woman.

Carson City Search and Rescue have been dispatched tonight to a vehicle stuck near the top of Kings Canyon. The couple inside the vehicle are unhurt and have cell phone coverage and are warm, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Assemblyman Richard Carrillo arrested for DUI, having firearm while intoxicated

Nevada Assemblyman Richard Carrillo was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and being in possession of a firearm while intoxicated, Carson City sheriff Ken Furlong said.

Carrillo, 48, of Las Vegas, and Assemblyman for the 18th district, faces charges of DUI and possessing a firearm while intoxicated. The Assemblyman bailed out of the Carson City Jail early this morning.

Early morning vehicle pursuit from Carson City to Reno called off for safety reasons

UPDATE: A motorist wanted for burglary in the Sparks area eluded Carson City sheriff's deputies early this morning in a vehicle pursuit that began around College Parkway but was terminated for safety reasons once the vehicle was in Reno, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Crossroads Bar on East Winnie Lane burglarized with cleaning person inside

The Crossroads Bar at Winnie Lane was burglarized this morning, with the cleaning person inside the business at the time they broke in, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The burglary happened at around 6:30 a.m., and involved two men, each wearing dark clothing and ski masks. They made entry, possibly using tools, gaining access through the back of the business at 300 east Winnie Lane across from Lone Mountain. Some evidence has been recovered, according to officers on scene. The cleaning person was not injured.

Two women arrested in Carson City sheriff's burglary investigation, 2 being sought

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong announced Friday that two more arrests were made overnight in connection with a rash of burglaries spread over Carson City, Washoe and Douglas counties. There's also one person of interest being sought and one person wanted. Four have been arrested thus far.

The new arrests are: Rachel Strull, 28. She is charged with two counts of maintaining a drug house, a felony, and use and possession of drug and paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. Her bail is $10,000. Also in custody is Crystal Bullock (Paetz), 31. She is charged with possession of a control substance, child neglect and endangerment, a gross misdemeanor. Bail $2,500.

UPDATE 9:30PM: The suspects arrested on suspicion of felony burglary are Travis Lieberwith, 37, and Brian Madson, 34, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong in a news release. Madson's photo was not available.

UPDATE 9:18PM: Two are in custody Thursday and more arrests are expected in what is seen as a break in a rash of dozens of burglaries that extends over three counties. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong provided a briefing as to a law enforcement operation involving more than 30 officers from three jurisdictions.

Update 6:02 p.m.: SWAT team just used flash bang devices and tear gas in the residence of the suspect. Deputies on the scene have reason to believe suspect may have a cache of stolen weapons.

Traffic on Corbett Street between Roop and Stewart has been blocked by Carson City Sheriff's deputies who are trying to apprehend a crime suspect.

Deputies are currently trying to evacuate two apartment complexes that are near where they think the suspect is holed up.

Major activity in Carson City a result of a reported burglary. Agencies involved include Washoe, Carson, and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office’s.

Over 30 officers dispersed over numerous locations in Washoe City and at least 4 locations in Carson City.
