What a crazy week in the Sierras! Afternoon thunderstorms for the last several days, flooding, hail, and even snow in Yosemite are definitely unusual for this time of year. The storms are expected to subside this weekend, so keep your fingers crossed for some sunshine. Boot stomping to bluegrass in a 1920’s boat house turned theater with Lake Tahoe in the background, kicking back at free concerts on a historic lakeshore estate’s grand lawn, and experiencing the Washoe tribe’s ceremonial dances and drumming are some of the many iconic experiences at Lake Tahoe’s Valhalla Arts, Music and Theatre Festival this July.

The Nevada State Fair is coming to town at the end of the month. July is made for picnics. Today is National Fried Chicken Day, and it does make for a good outdoors in a park kind of meal. Grab some potato salad, fresh fruit, and an umbrella: scattered thunderstorms are expected for most of the week. I’ll suggest you spend the rainy days in one of Carson City’s many art galleries, instead. The Nevada Artists Association gallery at the Brewery Arts Center, Great Basin Art Gallery on South Curry, or Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery on West Telegraph are always impressive. Check out the Carson City Arts Initiative exhibits at the BRIC and on the second floor of the Courthouse.

What began as a July 4th shrouded in clouds and the threat of thunderstorms ended Saturday in glorious, patriotic fashion with a 27-minute fireworks display at Mills Park in Carson City.

The 23rd annual event hosted by RSVP and Carson City Toyota-Scion, was among the longest displays in recent memory, filled with assorted colors of white and blue, with all the rockets red glare.

Happy birthday, America! Today we celebrate our independence, and what better way than with a carnival. You might as well stay at Mills Park all day, the fireworks display starts when it gets dark. Tune into Magic 95.5FM and you’ll hear the choreographed music to go along with the oohs and aaahs. Where ever you choose to watch fireworks, please be safe. There are thousands of visitors in the Northern Nevada area this weekend, and law enforcement will be out in full force.

Nevada has a reputation for its many UFO sightings, so if the clouds aren’t in the way, you may just see some strange lights. July 2nd was chosen because of the Roswell Incident in 1947.

The Kings Canyon Trailhead opens today after a ceremony thanking all those involved in the undertaking. The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] announces its exhibition, Counterpane by artist Emily Silver, at St. Mary's Art Center's Meinecke Gallery from June 27 – August 22, 2015.

CCAI and St. Mary's will host a reception for the artist on Saturday, June 27, 1-4pm including an artist talk at 2pm. St. Mary's Art Center is located at 55 North R Street, Virginia City, Nevada. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open to the public Thursday – Sunday, 11am – 4pm.

The Nevada Artists Association has just switched up their gallery at the Brewery Arts Center and has a new summertime theme. Head over to the Community Center at 12:30 p.m. or at 5:30 p.m. to see what the designers have come up with for downtown. Your input is important in this phase of the planning, so make sure you bring your ideas!

Here are the winners of the 21st annual Taste of Downtown Carson City. Saturday's event, which brought thousands to the downtown area and had more than 40 restaurants represented in the mix, was the main fundraiser for Advocates to End Domestic Violence. The winners were voted on by ticket holders of the main event.

Carson City community members flooded downtown for Taste of Downtown Saturday evening with their appetites ready to taste the delicious foods prepared by local businesses. Taste of Downtown gave guests a wide range of dinner entrees, promoted local businesses and supported Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

We made it, Carson City! It’s Friday, and the first day of summer is this weekend. The Reno Rodeo has begun, and there are several days to get in on the action. Tonight, Carson City BMX is hosting Race for Life, and anyone with a bmx bike and a helmet can participate in helping them raise funds for a good cause. The annual Powwow kicks off at the Stewart Indian School with Grand Entrance at 7 p.m. Head to Comma Coffee and celebrate eleven years of World Dance Open Floor: just watch or sign up to show your moves.
