Every year, shelters across the country see a sharp increase in stray animals during the 24-hour period around July 4 and 5 as noisy fireworks frighten many animals.

Back to back weekends filled with events at Mills Park in Carson City culminates this weekend with the annual RSVP 4th of July Carnival and Celebration, which launches Friday.

This will be the 24th year that RSVP has sponsored the holiday weekend carnival, complete with fireworks on Monday, July 4, plus plenty of rides, music, food booths, arts and crafts vendors and demonstrations throughout the weekend.

The Fourth of July holiday period is the busiest time of year in the Lake Tahoe Basin. For those visiting during the holiday and attending one of the firework displays over the lake, expect extremely crowded conditions and excess traffic.

The bicycles are off the hills, the rat-rods have sputtered home, but Independence Day weekend is next on the list. Rest up and start planning for fireworks. Mondays in Carson City are relatively quiet, but Ed's Doghouse is standing by with mimosa specials, Carson Lanes will let you bowl all day for $1 a game, and the Nevada Artists Association at the Brewery Art Center has a new show in the gallery that it would love you to come see.

Boaters arriving at Lake Tahoe for July 4 weekend urged to clean vessels ahead of inspection

The July 4 holiday and fireworks celebrations always bring an influx of boaters to the Lake Tahoe Basin. With sunny skies and warm weather predicted for the week and into the three-day weekend, boaters are urged to clean, drain and dry their vessels before arriving at the roadside inspection stations to avoid delays and decontamination fees.

With summer here and more people heading outdoors to enjoy the season, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest would like to remind visitors and residents in communities adjacent to the Forest to be extra cautious while engaging in activities that could start a wildfire.

WNC Softball: Wildcats bombard Coyotes in Henderson

Western Nevada College's offense continued to sing and sting at College of Southern Nevada on Saturday afternoon. After scoring 31 runs and connecting for 27 hits during a Scenic West Athletic Conference softball doubleheader sweep on Friday, the Wildcats raked Coyotes pitching for 12 hits in a 15-0 opening-game win Saturday in Henderson.

Carson City Sheriff: Fireworks and gunfire at Silver Saddle Ranch part of mounted horse training

The mounted unit of the Carson City Sheriff's Office will be working with horses Friday after sunset and into the evening in which fireworks and gunfire will be used as part of the training, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The event is to help condition the horses to loud noises. The exercise will be held at Silver Saddle Ranch and should be over by 10 p.m.

A fireworks event that happened Saturday night at the Carson City Airport caught many by surprise, including Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Airport Manager Tim Rowe confirmed the fireworks going off Saturday night at Carson City Airport was part of a planned memorial service.

The fireworks, which began at around 6:15 p.m., prompted multiple calls to 911 dispatch. The fireworks show was on behalf of Ted Melsheimer, a longtime supporter of the Carson City Airport who had a B-25 Bomber "Tootsie" that was often seen in the skies around Carson City and air shows. He died November 17, 2015, according to FitzHenry's Funeral Home.

Nevada Northern Railway Museum’s Fireworks Express train ride offers a firework show from the back of a moving train on Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend.

On Saturday, Jan. 16, historic locomotive 93 steams out of the museum and through downtown Ely to launch its fireworks for both onlookers and passengers. Started in 2009 for the locomotive’s centennial celebration, the fireworks express is a popular event and seats on the train often sell out.

Carson City sheriff’s log: Man jailed after threatening co-worker with shovel

A 37-year-old Gardnerville man was arrested Thursday after allegedly threatening a co-worker with a shovel earlier in the day and then law enforcement later after he was arrested, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Agencies prepare for Lake Tahoe New Year's Eve celebration at Stateline

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is preparing for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebration at Lake Tahoe starting on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015.

Due to the high volume of celebrants within the Stateline casino core area during this event, U.S. Highway 50 may be closed to vehicle traffic in the evening if necessary for public safety.

What a weekend in store for us: the Silver and Snowflakes Tree Lighting, the wine walk, Holiday with a Hero crawl, and more. First things first, though, Thursday fun stuff. Bundle up and head to Gardnerville for the Christmas Kick-off at Heritage Park with Santa, a tree lighting, and fireworks if the weather cooperates. Empty Bowls is hosting a preview night at the First Presbyterian Church; for a donation of $25 or more you get first pick of the handmade bowls that members of the community have made and decorated over the past year, and that includes admission to the soup fest tomorrow.

Police vehicle chase ends with one arrest at Paiute and Shoshone streets

UPDATE: One person is in custody tonight following a vehicle chase that ended off of Curry Street, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. At one point, three were detained. Carson Now readers have asked about gunshots heard. Furlong noted the agency has also dealt with fireworks issues tonight in the area.

A vehicle chase that began just before 7:30 p.m. for a failure to yield ended with at least 10 patrol vehicles working in tandem to stop the vehicle before it caused a serious wreck. Three were apprehended when the vehicle chase ended at Paiute and Shoshone just off of Curry Street.

It’s fireworks Friday here in Carson City. Harley Davidson is throwing a party for Street Vibrations with live music, vendors and more. Look to the sky around 8:30 p.m. to catch the fireworks show. Spruce up your resume and head to the Community Center. A job fair with more than 50 employers opens its doors to the public at 2 p.m. Go Big Blue! The varsity football game against Hug High School starts at 7 p.m. following the Homecoming Float Parade. Catch some live music at Living the Good Life or Westside Pour House. You’ll find a reason to laugh at Carson Comedy inside the Carson Nugget.

Carson City Harley-Davidson hosts 3-day BikeFest during Street Vibrations with food, bands and fireworks

As Street Vibrations rolls between Reno and Virginia City into the weekend, Carson City Harley-Davidson will host its 15th annual BikeFest celebration beginning Thursday with a fireworks show Friday night, bands, and a concert by WAR on Saturday night.
