Wall of blowing dust prompts Dust Storm Warning northeast of Highway 50

The National Weather Service has issued a Dust Storm Warning until midnight for the western Nevada basin, including Pyramid Lake and the cities of Fallon, Fernley, Imlay, Middlegate, Nixon and Lovelock.

Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas are not in the warning area.

Check of 186 sex offenders in Lyon County and Fallon results in one arrest, 26 not in compliance

A recent check of 186 sex offenders in Lyon County and Fallon resulted in one arrest and 26 people found to not be in compliance with registration requirements, the Nevada Department of Public Safety and Parole and Probation announced Tuesday.

The multi-agency collaborative effort, called "Operation Vigilance" was done to verify sex offender registration compliance and was conducted in Dayton, Silver Springs, Yerington, Fernley, Stagecoach and Fallon.

Last weekend the cyclists ruled our city, but now the hot-rodders are king of the road. The Rockabilly Riot is jam-packed with activities all over town: the races and booths at Mills Park; a street dance at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; a tattoo show in the Community Center; a free concert at Gold Dust West; and Burlesque at the Nugget. Don’t think that’s all our valley has to offer, though, keep reading for all this weekend’s fun.

Carson City weather: Gusty winds prompt Red Flag Warning, firefighters on high alert

It will be dry and breezy today with Red Flag Warnings in effect for much of western Nevada including Carson City. Firefighters around the region are keeping a watchful eye on conditions and have already made smoke investigations checks in area.

A small, smoldering campfire was discovered by firefighters at around noon doing a smoke investigation north of Carson City, according to dispatch. A small brush fire was reported at around 11:30 a.m. in the Silver Springs area, according to the Central Lyon County Fire District.

The Nevada Division of Tourism’s annual “Discover Your Nevada” program has officially kicked off with a new incentive for Nevadans to explore their state, Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchison announced earlier this month. That incentive is a Field Trip Fund benefitting Silver State students.

Western Nevada College graduates record number

Western Nevada College graduated its largest class ever Monday. A record 556 students earned a total of 598 degrees and certificates.

In a first, 27 graduates are high school students who participated in WNC’s Jump Start College program. These students are to receive their associate degrees prior to receiving their high school diplomas.

A new and long awaited 2,000-acre rail center and industrial park development is going forward in Lyon and Churchill counties, officials tied to the project announced Thursday.
