Heading into Memorial Day, May 27, 2019, we urge all to take time out of your day to honor those who served and died defending our country. Memorial Day is the day we celebrate those men and women who passed while serving in the United States Armed Forces. There are events Monday in Carson City at the Stewart Indian School Cemetery and at Lone Mountain Cemetery and in Fernley at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City kicked-off Memorial Day weekend with all-day steam train rides.

As we head into a jam-packed Memorial Day weekend, activities and events around Carson City on Friday will help set the mood for what promises to be a tremendous few days ahead. Festivities include the opening day of the Rockin’ Rib Fest at Carson City's Casino Fandango, the planting of American flags on the graves of our fallen veterans at Lone Mountain Cemetery, a weekly open mic night at A to Zen, laughs at the Carson Comedy Club, live music and more.

Heading into Thursday, May 23, 2019 we ask: Can you feel it? Yes, the Memorial Day holiday is nearly here and we may even get a weather break or four in between expected showers through the weekend, forecasters say. Activities and events to round out this third Thursday of the month include a meet and greet of Carson City Library candidates at Adams Hub for Innovation, a day hike, a bicycle cruise on the west side of the capital city, a Lunch and Learn Workshop for local nonprofit organizations, a chamber luncheon focusing on mental health, a GOP meeting, art showings, live music and more. As we head into Tuesday, May 21, 2019 there seems to be some debate brewing about the weather. Is the persistent series of cold weather systems normal or not? We spoke with a forecaster from the National Weather Service about it and he noted that everyone has an opinion. Some folks swear this happens every Spring, storm after relentless storm through the entire month of May. Some swear the month of May in western Nevada is usually sunny, in the upper 70s to low 80s and comfortable. Whichever you believe, go with it and enjoy. Here's what's ahead Tuesday:

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Artist Patricia Wallis has a background in plein air and aerial painting, having spent much of her 30-year career in Marin County, Calif.

Moving to Reno, she found a completely new palette of color in the landscape. Another change she made in in the past decade was a decision to work exclusively on copper, which gives the image a unique luminescence not found when working on canvas or board. Oil painting on copper goes back to the 15thcentury although it is rarely used by contemporary artists.

As we head into the middle of the month many of us haven't turned on the air conditioner because the weather outside has been comfortably, pleasantly air conditioned these past few weeks. CARSON CITY — A concerned motorist notified Nevada Highway Patrol troopers Thursday, May 9 that a white Nissan Frontier pick-up truck was operating with red and blue flashing lights and using the lights to move vehicles over and out of the way.

Another picture-perfect Carson City day awaits as we head into Monday, May 13, 2019. We're looking at mostly sunny skies with daytime highs in the low 80s. We want to send a big birthday "shoutout" to our outdoor editor emeritus Don Quilici, who turns 85 today. This May, the Nevada Department of Conservation & Natural Resources’ State Historic Preservation Office encourages Nevadans to explore and discover the amazing historic and archeological resources that exist throughout the State.
