A Carson High School student's senior project, designed to help parents and community members identify drug abuse and mental distress, was on display last week as part of a Partnership Carson City youth high school program display.

Hand-made noisemakers, dancing, music and a short parade will all help usher in The Year of the Rat in Carson City this Saturday, Jan. 25.

RENO — Nevada art enthusiasts, collectors, and researchers now have an enhanced primary source they can reference to help deepen their interests in and awareness of Nevada art and artists.

At the upcoming Carson City Board of Supervisor's meeting, a discussion regarding the reconveyance of the property housing the Brewery Arts Center from the city to the BAC itself will be held, so long as any religious activity will continue to be prohibited at the site.

Last Saturday I was part of the Rotary Club's Shopping Spree. This annual event pairs a Rotarian with a needy child in hopes of purchasing gifts for the child and members of his/her family.

The young man that I accompanied was a rather precocious and talkative eight-year old who was a bit jaded when it came to acknowledging the magic of Christmas. However, during the shopping part of the activity, my new young friend became very animated and hopeful as he talked about selecting gifts for his family and for himself.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

Enjoying the mix of sunshine, clouds and the overall late fall conditions around the capital city? More of the same is expected Wednesday into Thursday, with another system due in time for the weekend. Activities around Carson City include an educational discussion on dementia presented by the Alzheimer's Association at the Carson City Library, a moonlight walk to C-Hill, a "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, art showings, a Carson Valley Community Theatre audition call for two plays, classes and more.

On Saturday, Dec. 14, Linda Ritter, artist and owner of Pinyon Pottery, will demonstrate the art of pottery making between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. bringing in her pottery wheel to the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, 1900 S. Carson Street. Many of her art pieces will be on display and for sale, just in time for the holidays.

Partly sunny skies and a daytime high in the mid-40s looks to be the order of the day around the capital city as we roll into Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of holiday events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights, the 24th annual Parade of Lights in Gardnerville, the annual Project Empty Bowls dinner held at the Carson Mall, a Holiday Crawl in downtown Carson City and much more! The break in the stormy weather was a short one, with more precipitation later in the day Wednesday, forecasters say. Activities around Carson City on Dec. 4 include a "Red Kettle" job hiring event at the Carson City Salvation Army, a Fitness Lab grand opening on Minnesota Street, a "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, art showings, library activities, classes and more.

Snow days, snow way. At least that's what the weather forecast calls for Tuesday. We'll see mostly cloudy skies before another chance of rain or snow arrives midweek and then a larger storm in time for the weekend. As the saying goes of Nevada weather: Wait a minute and it will change. It is also #GivingTuesday. If you have a favorite organization, it's a good time to send a few dollars their way. Around town there's art showings, a fitness walk, hike, dance classes and an old school film favorite at the Brewery Arts Center hosted by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club.

Everyone has a disability of some kind, but most learn how to cope with or overcome it; however, not everyone with a disability is aware enough to recognize whether or not they even have a physical challenge. These individuals have a severe and profound physical and neurological disability, cannot care for themselves, need full-time assistance, and are some of the kindest human beings in the world, many of whom are students in the Carson City School District and at CHS. Each year, students in the CHS Comprehensive Life Skills program make crafts to sell at the annual CHS Craft Fair and give as gifts.

Five years ago, Chef Don Pepe launched a holiday fundraiser to help Pets of the Homeless, a Carson City-based 501(c)3 non-profit that raises money to provide food, veterinary care and other essentials to the pets of homeless persons.

With snow overnight into the morning, the eve of Thanksgiving will bustle with last minute food shopping and, for many, preparing for an extended holiday weekend. The generosity of the Western Nevada College community has made it possible to feed 100 families Thanksgiving dinner.  WNC contributed 100 turkeys and other Thanksgiving dinner favorites to Friends In Services Helping’s annual High Five Turkey Drive.

Even though valley rain and Sierra snow happen this time of year, we're in for a brief change after going weeks without any precipitation. Enjoy the changeup. Officially designated 1P/Halley, this is a short-period comet visible from Earth every 75–76 year and is the only known short-period comet that is visible to the naked eye from Earth and the only naked-eye comet that might appear twice in a human lifetime.
