Carson City and Douglas County are again participating in a statewide Christmas tree recycling effort. As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to one of several drop off locations.

Carson Now reader Luis Tello says everyone is invited to drive on through and take pictures of their magical homage to Christmas, complete with multiple lighted decorations, holiday themed cartoon characters, dancing reindeer, a light show and more.

"People are more than welcome to stop by, take pictures and have fun. Let's enjoy the Holidays and forget about all these hard times. Everyone needs this more than ever. Merry Christmas!" says Luis.

Carson City is pleased to offer Christmas Tree Recycling in cooperation with Capital Sanitation/Waste Management, Inc.

As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to one of the drop off locations. Trees will be chipped in the springtime and used as mulch. This program continues to be a huge success.

Please remove all decorations, lights, tinsel and bases prior to recycling; if the tree is longer than six feet, cut the tree into pieces.

NEW WASHOE CITY — Enjoy some holiday cheer at Washoe Lake State Park with a sparkling drive-through festival of lights. Campground Loop B will be decorated with a jolly display of twinkling lights and holiday scenes. Stay warm and merry as you listen to your favorite holiday music while driving through the campground, enjoying the cheerful decorations.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Several fundraisers, including the annual “Share Your Christmas” Food Drive will be available throughout the Carson City, Minden and Reno areas on Friday. You can visit the North Pole safely as part of a drive-thru Santa's Village experience at V&T Railway in Carson City, beginning Friday into the weekend. A living nativity scene will be featured at First United Methodist Church on Saturday and Sunday. Combined with train rides in Virginia City, the state capital will be buzzing with excitement. Many in Carson City do everything they can to help the less fortunate, and those opportunities never cease being opportunities. With this in mind, the holidays are here, the semester at Carson High School is almost over, Christmas vacation, also known as winter break, begins Dec. 19, and there is another opportunity to be generous for those who have plenty.

Partnership Carson City, founded to develop a healthy community, is showing appreciation for Carson City’s teachers and senior citizens with a school supply and decorations giveaway. JOANN Fabrics and Crafts generously donated several boxes of seasonal holiday decorations and PCC is including an assortment of school supplies available for use.

Graduates of the Carson City Chamber Leadership classes volunteered their time Saturday to assist the state grounds crew in installing Christmas lights and decorations in front of the capitol.

With October now here, retailers statewide are stocking up on the essentials for the most frightening time of the year. This year, Nevada consumers are projected to spend $128.7 million on scary decorations, elaborate costumes and sugary sweets to celebrate Halloween, according to estimates by the Retail Association of Nevada.

Sierra Lutheran High School will host the 3rd Annual Christ is Christmas Craft Fair Saturday, Nov. 7, on the SLHS campus from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The school will be strategically using outdoor and indoor space on its 34-acre campus to promote the kickoff to the Christmas shopping season within social distancing guidelines.

According to Storey County Commissioner Jay Carmona the fireworks show in Virginia City has been canceled today as of 1 p.m. The Cruise will be continuing as planned.

According to Carmona, there was an issue with releasing the cancellation announcement but the fireworks are indeed cancelled this year.

While the annual Fourth of July firework shows began to be cancelled throughout the Silver State in May, Virginia City has opted for a social distancing celebration.

Virginia City and parades are synonymous with each other. But how do you throw a parade during the age of social distancing and with many COVID-19 restrictions still in place? Easy. What is traditionally one of the largest parades for the historic town, the Memorial Day Parade, will turn into a cruise honoring our country’s fallen heroes.

A weather system moving into the region will bring strong gusty winds, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a High Wind Warning from 10 p.m. Monday through 1 p.m. Tuesday for the greater Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton areas as well as the Mono County region.

Heading into last day of 2019, we're looking at partly sunny skies with a high around 50 and low around 30. Activities around the capital city region are lined up through the day and evening. As we head into the final Monday of 2019, we're looking at a slight chance of light snow in the morning as a weak weather system brushes the region. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

The Red Hat Society delivered warm bedding and clothing to each of the residents at Richards Crossing in Carson City last week. A local chapter of the Red Hat Society named the “Classy Sassy Bear Ladies” organized a Christmas gift giveaway for the residents. The giveaway, for which planning started over the summer, collected homemade and donated blankets, scarves and socks.

Enjoying the mix of sunshine, clouds and the overall late fall conditions around the capital city? More of the same is expected Wednesday into Thursday, with another system due in time for the weekend. Activities around Carson City include an educational discussion on dementia presented by the Alzheimer's Association at the Carson City Library, a moonlight walk to C-Hill, a "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, art showings, a Carson Valley Community Theatre audition call for two plays, classes and more.

Bundle up and join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space for another adventure under the full moon. December's full moon hike this Wednesday will not only feature the beautiful "Cold Moon," we will also be getting a unique vantage point of the city's holiday decorations from atop C-Hill.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space invites the community to the inaugural Homestead Holidays event at Silver Saddle Ranch, Dec. 13-15, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. each night. Homestead Holidays is intended to be an old-fashioned holiday celebration with handcrafted decorations, holiday lights ornamenting historic ranch buildings, and family activities for all ages.

Once the dishes were done from Thanksgiving dinner, shoppers kicked off the shopping weekend immediately and headed to stores and online retailers to take advantage of deals and discounts over the long weekend and Cyber Monday. In the Silver State, the Retail Association of Nevada estimates that more than 1.7 million people spent a total of $638.9 million on gifts, decorations and other merchandise over the five-day period.
