With sunny skies and daytime highs in the 50s, Tuesday is shaping up to be a great day around the capital city. It’s February already. Days are longer and happily, it will soon be planting time. According to USDA plant hardiness zone map, most of us will be relatively safe planting based on Zone 6b, with temperature lows ranging from minus 5 to 0 degrees F.

Breezy northeast and east winds may result in another round of blowing dust Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Dust kicked up from nearby dry lake beds may produce localized areas of visibility reduced below 4 miles, including portions of Reno and Carson City.

Heading into Monday and the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday we're looking at cloudy skies with a daytime high around 50 degrees. City, state and federal offices are closed as are schools. A mountain lion was spotted Tuesday morning in the hills in northwest Carson City in the Timberline area, prompting wildlife officials to urge residents to be aware and to take steps to avoid any chance of human and cougar contact.

Looking at the week ahead weather wise around the Carson City region, forecasters say a couple of weak weather systems may bring some wind and a slight chance of rain or snow showers to the area Tuesday night and Thursday, but nothing to brag about until possibly into the weekend.

The Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Bridgeport Ranger District will open for snowmobiling starting at midnight on Monday, Dec 16.

After weeks of abundant sunshine and above-average fall temperatures, some change is ahead weather wise around the Carson City region, with a system expected to move into the region late Tuesday, bringing the potential for some valley rain showers and mountain snow, but not considered in any way a major winter storm, forecasters say.


On and off, on off. That’s what I keep doing with our irrigation and hoses as the daytime temperatures stay warm, but with nighttime temperatures below freezing. On, water; off, open spigots and hoses and drain them. While this is tedious, I am enjoying the beautiful weather.

Going into the eve of Halloween, teeth will be chattering as the weather calls for sunny skies but with a chill in the air and daytime temperatures in the upper 40s around the capital city. Events around town Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019 include a Halloween costume walk at Riverview Park in Carson City, a "trick or trunk" event in Dayton, art showings, storytelling at the Carson City Library and more.

As the last Nevada Day event on Saturday was winding down, the pleasantly warm weather the Carson City region has been experiencing for several days seems to have gone the way of the setting sun.

While sunshine remains in the fold Sunday and through much of the week, daytime high temperatures will be around 20 to 25 degrees cooler than what the region has, for days, been experiencing, according to the National Weather Service.

The nights are freezing, but the daytime temperature should reach 66 degrees today and the mid to upper 70s later this week. When the temperatures vary from freezing at night to warm days, it’s hard to know how much to water.

An approaching low pressure system will bring strong, gusty winds Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag warning for Carson City and much of the Western Nevada Sierra Front.

CARSON CITY — Beginning Sept. 23, single lane closures will be in place and commercial trucks will temporarily be prohibited from traveling westbound over the Mt. Rose Highway summit (State Route 431) as part of continuing Nevada Department of Transportation roadway improvements.

With a strong cold front pushing into the region that will bring gusty winds and low humidity over the next two days, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for northern and western Nevada and Lake Tahoe region. Weather conditions will be especially dangerous along the 395 corridor from Susanville to Mammoth Lakes.
