Outdoors with Don Q: A few more days left to fish many California waters

This my annual reminder that many California waters will close to fishing on Thursday, November 15.
That’s only a few days from now, so if you want to fish any of them, you better hustle because you are rapidly running out of time.
Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year (April 27, 2013), and that is a long, long time to wait to wet your line.
Here is a partial list of some of the nearby waters that will be closing on November 15:

Former corrections guard Vincent Wayne Gilpatrick identified in fatal Carson City motorcycle crash

The name of the motorcycle rider killed in a head-on crash in Carson City on Tuesday has been identified. Vincent Wayne Gilpatrick, 33, of Carson City, died from injuries in the crash, said Sheriff Ken Furlong. A juvenile driving a Jeep Cherokee was taken to the hospital. Gilpatrick was a former corrections guard. His family is from the Ely area.

Accident in Carson City kills motorcyclist

UPDATE 5:30PM: A motorcycle and a vehicle reportedly collided this afternoon in Carson City, killing the motorcyclist. The accident was reported at around 4:50 p.m. at Camballeria Drive and Carson River Road. The accident victim, a man who has not yet been identified, was reported to be "not moving" and Care Flight was called.
The call was cancelled because the motorcyclist died from injuries, according to Carson City emergency personnel at the scene and confirmed by Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Lahontan State Recreation Area to benefit from AAA Nevada Donation

AAA Nevada will present $20,250 to the Nevada Division of State Parks to improve directional signs throughout Lahontan State Recreation Area. The public is invited to attend the check presentation ceremony that will take place Tuesday, October 23, at 1:30 p.m. at 901 S. Stewart Street in Carson City.

AAA Nevada teamed up to help Nevada State Parks help fund projects that would otherwise go unfunded. Throughout their “Summer Road Trip” campaign July 1 through August 30, AAA Nevada donated $5 to Nevada State Parks for every AAA insurance quote completed within each AAA branch office.

It's that time of the year for my reminder to enjoy the spectacular color of the leaves on Quaking aspen trees (Quakies) in Alpine County, Calif.

Genoa Lakes Sale in Escrow, Set to Close in October

Sale of the 564-acre Genoa Lakes Golf Resort to Mazz Golf Management Co. is currently in escrow with closing expected in mid-October, the principals of the deal announced in a news release.

Carson River Cleanup on Saturday

The banks of the Carson River through Carson City are up for a good scrubbing on Saturday, Sept. 15. As part of the 19th annual National Public Lands Day, the Carson River Cleanup, hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Carson City and the Bureau of Land Management, will focus on areas around Brunswick Canyon and Prison Hill Recreation area.
To get in on the cleanup, meet at the BLM-Carson City District Office's west parking lot, located at 5665 Morgan Mill Road at Deer Run Road, three blocks south of U.S. Highway 50 on the east side of Carson City along the Carson River, at 8 a.m.

Saturday is Free Fishing Day in California

As I noted earlier this year, one of California’s two Free Fishing Days will be on Sept. 8. The other Free Fishing Day was way back on July 7. You can fish, all day, without a fishing license on Saturday.
You will be able to fish wherever you like in California, without the need for a fishing license.

Carson City Sheriff's Search and Rescue Assits Lyon County Search and Rescue

Two kayakers spent Father's Day on the Carson River. A father and son combination put their kayaks into the water near Bertonelli's pit around 2:30pm and left their vehicle at the Santa Maria Ranch Park in Dayton. They got caught up many times on rocks and low water areas and soon found themselves in the dark and unable to continue.

Oregon students "Pay It Forward" in Carson City

CARSON CITY — It’s not a typical summer road trip filled with beach visits and tourist traps. Instead it’s a community service road trip filled with good deeds.

Twenty‐two students from Portland, Oregon area High Schools will visit Carson City as part of a community service road trip called the Pay It Forward (PIF) Tour. The tour allows students the opportunity to serve, lead and learn. In just five days, these students will travel to and serve in four different communities; Carson City is their last stop.

Don Q Outdoors: Saturday is Nevada Free Fishing Day

Here’s an advance notice of something very special in the Outdoor world that will occur in just several days:

Draw a great big red circle around the date of Saturday, June 9 on your calendar and then plan to have a fun-filled day in the Great Outdoors.
June 09 is Nevada’s Free Fishing Day for the year 2012.

On that day, you can fish anywhere you want, and not need a Nevada fishing license or a Nevada Trout Stamp or a Nevada Second Rod Stamp.

Fire restrictions go into effect tomorrow

Seasonal drying conditions, increasing daytime temperatures and a number of human-caused fires have prompted the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District Office and the Nevada Division of Forestry’s Sierra Forest Fire Protection District to announce the implementation of fire restrictions on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at 12:01 a.m., and lasting until further notice.

2012 Tour of Carson Report

Last Sunday May 6th was Bike Habitat‘s Tour of Carson, an annual event that this year celebrates the shop’s 5th anniversary in business! The Tour of Carson began in 2008 as a way for the shop to say thank you to its customers and the community for their support. The event begins with a 27-30 mile ride around the perimeter of Carson City, and then finishes back at the Bike Habitat for a BBQ.
