Music is good for the soul and the Capital City Community Band is just what the doctor ordered. Grab the kids and head to the First Presbyterian Church for a free concert. Get in a bike ride before the wet weather returns: Muscle Powered leaves from Fremont Elementary School at 9 a.m. and also sponsors weekly hikes throughout town. If you’re interested in joining them, their potluck membership meeting this afternoon at the Brewery Arts Center is the perfect time to fill out a membership card.

Carson Now reader Valence Duarte submitted photos and asked what we knew about ongoing repairs around the city's parks following flooding earlier this month, especially around Empire Ranch and Fifth Street. We asked the city to respond to the question and got a followup by Jennifer Budge, CPRP director for Carson City Parks and Recreation.

SATURDAY: Chinese New Year

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation will hold its first Open House of the new year at the Wungnema House in Mills Park Sunday, Jan. 29, from 2 to 5 p.m. The building is accessible by the Park entrance on Saliman Road, opposite the high school. Admission to the open house is free.

With overnight temperatures expected to hover in the low teens and single digits through the weekend and events already pre-planned at the facility that regularly is available for the area’s homeless during cold nights, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong agreed Wednesday to open the department’s Ormsby Room inside its administrative office on Friday and Saturday night.

It’s hard not to notice the beauty around Carson City: the mountains, the historic buildings and our Capitol, the people. We have several talented artists and photographers that capture our valley in the best light. Enjoy the sunshine while we’ve got it. More rain and snow is just around the corner, so if you think you’ll need sandbags, grab them now. The Carson Animal Shelter Initiative (CASI) meets monthly and is always looking for more people to get involved: join them at the new Animal Shelter. Award-winning Canyon White returns to Living the Good Life for an acoustic set. Chili’s restaurant is hosting a fundraiser for Eagle Valley Middle School: helping out is as simple as buying dinner.

TUESDAY:

After a brief pause in the rain yesterday, the storm has returned. I write this list with trepidation, as localized flooding is still affecting homes and businesses around town. Everything on this list is subject to cancellation. It’s back to school for the kids of Lyon County and Carson. Jacks Valley Elementary is closed, but all other Minden/Gardnerville students are headed back. Stay safe out there, and thank you to all the city and state staff, volunteers, and good neighbors that are working hard to keep the damage to a minimum.

TUESDAY:

Due to heavy rains, area flooding, and a State of Emergency, all Carson City Parks and Recreation facilities, sports leagues, and before and after school care programs (Kids Klub) will be closed Monday.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Snowy days make the perfect backdrop for a day curled up with a book. If you’re participating in the Library Winter Read-athon, tear yourself away from your cozy spot and go log in your hours this afternoon.

When it comes to history, the west side of Carson City gets most the attention. Learn what makes the east side unique on the Parks and Recreation Easy Walk at 9 a.m. Galaxy Theater offers a special movie rate on Tuesdays if you’ve got a rewards card: grab the kids and take in a winter break movie. The Old Corner Bar in Minden welcomes the return of the Flash Jam, so grab your instrument and get your groove on.

Just one last week to go until Hanukkah and Christmas. The Carson Mall is jam-packed full of crafters and unique shops for some of your last-minute gift purchases. Hop in the car and take a tour of the brightly lit downtown and houses throughout the area. Kids will enjoy decorating a cookie at Genoa Candy and Coffee in Carson Lanes; you may as well get there early and bowl a few games first.

Oh baby, it’s cold outside. Jack Frost seems to be working overtime this weekend, bringing temperatures that will barely rise above freezing. I suggest some hot cocoa. Join Santa at Adele’s for pictures, cookies, and something warm to drink, just remember to bring an unwrapped toy to donate.

The moon has looked incredible these last few nights, and a view from Washoe Lake State Park is sure to inspire. Just make sure to call for reservations if you’d like to join the guided hike along the sand dunes. For some daytime scenery, join Parks and Rec. for their easy walk at Fuji Park. Head to Comma Coffee tonight for hot drinks and cool jazz. Enjoy the vocal stylings of Jakki Ford and proprietor June Joplin, in addition to some great poetry. Localized flooding is being experienced throughout much of Carson City as a winter storm continues to bring drenching rain to not only western Nevada but the Sierra.

Carson City Fire Chief and Emergency Manager Bob Schreihans notes that minor street flooding, mud and debris have been the result of the arrival of an "Atmospheric River" type storm, which started early this morning in the Sierra and Western Nevada.

What do you need to get in the holiday spirit? Carson City probably has it covered. Watch ‘A Christmas Wish’ with Jimmy Durante at the monthly meeting of the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. Let the talented kids of ‘Strings in the Schools’ entertain you with their annual ‘This is Not a Christmas Concert’ Concert at the Community Center. If you need some bowl-full-of-jelly belly laughs, then the Super Santa Extravaganza, featuring some of the area’s funniest stand-up comics, is for you. You’ll find that in the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theater. For a good dose of Christmas lights, head to the Johnson Lane area. Off Stephanie Lane, on Chaparral Court, is a spectacular display known as Nevada Christmas.

Carson City Parks and Recreation Youth Programs is hosting a donation drive for Toys for Tots. We have partnered with Division of Children and Family Services here in Carson City to donate toys for the Toys for Tots program. The Ron Wood Family Resource Center here in Carson City has decided to partner with Toys for Tots to donate items as well.

Today is the National Day of Giving, a day to think about the charities that help make our communities a better place. Choose your favorite non-profit and put them on your gift list; help them help others. Do yourself a favor and get one step ahead of flu season with the vaccination clinic at the Carson Library today. It’s a chilly day, but it’s always hot on the dance floor: country dance at Carson Lanes or swing dance at El Charro Avita will get your blood pumping.

The turkeys have been cooked, the dishes done, and the largest shopping weekend of the year is off and running. Show some love locally during Shop Small Business Saturday. Great little shops, restaurants, and services offer something unique for those on your gift list. Gift Certificates are never a bad way to go either: who wouldn’t want a massage, a night on the town, or maybe some music lessons? Santa has returned to town and can be found at the Carson Mall or at Billow’s Embroidery. Keep reading and you’ll find some great ways to spend this holiday weekend.

Carson City's ice skating rink has returned to Arlington Square at the corner of W. Robinson St. and N. Carson St. Opening day will be Saturday, Nov. 26, with three session times to choose from: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Sometimes you just want to make some noise. The brand-new Harmony Sculpture Park at the Brewery Arts Center is the perfect place to make some music: the ribbon cutting is at 1 p.m. The new FoodMax will open in early December and jobs are still available: the job fair at Job Connect will put you in the running. Let Firehouse Subs take care of dinner tonight, and do something for our local Relay for Life in the process. We are in for some wet weather over the next few days, so please slow down and watch for slick roads.

Members of the Eagle Valley Disc Golf Association (EVDGA) are currently out in the community seeking donations to help construct a disc golf course in East Carson City, said Carson City Parks and Recreation Senior Planner Vern Krahn.

Just nine days until Thanksgiving and the Carson Library is offering a pretty novel way to acquire a turkey: Turkey Bingo. Go try your luck and see if you walk away with your dinner centerpiece. Sierra Nevada Forums feature our great local volunteer organizations and what you can do to get involved; learn more at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall. The Change Place, a new whole body, mind wellness center, hosts its Grand Opening today. Check out the Christmas Bazaar at the Elks Club and see what goodies the Emblem Club has baked up. I would be remiss if I didn’t urge you to do your civic duty.All Carson City voters can choose between the Community Center or the Courthouse any time before 7 p.m. If you need to get away from it all, Muscle Powered leads a walk along the Linear Ditch Trail this afternoon. Comma Coffee welcomes the Mile High Jazz Band: Election Day Jazz with vocalist Jakki Ford is the perfect way to spend a Tuesday night.

Whew. One more Halloween/Nevada Day weekend in the bag: now let’s start November off with a bang. Celebrate Dia de Los Muertos at Red’s Old 395 with the Modelo girls or check out the festivities at Western Nevada College that the Latino Outreach and Association of Latin American Students have planned. Travel back in time with the Carson Chamber Singers in Concert featuring Requiem for the Living and music of the Renaissance at the Shepherd of the Sierra Church. The popcorn is always free at the monthly Carson City Classic Cinema Club’s movie viewing.

After an action-packed Nevada Day Saturday, Sunday traditions carry on, such as the 35th Annual La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the Carson Colony gym. Take the kids up to Virginia City for one last chance to catch Thomas the Tank Engine at the V & T Depot. It may be a little rainy, but the show must go on at the NV Day Carnival and Festival at Mills Park.

Happy Birthday Nevada. My favorite holiday has arrived, and with it a mountain of fun to be had. Normally my weekend list is sorted by chronological start time, but for this one I will be separating out the downtown parade related activities for your ease. The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation is holding an Open House at the Wungnema House in Mills Park during Nevada Day Weekend on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016, from 2 to 5 p.m.

This will be an opportunity to learn about this historic building, about Indian history and culture, and about the Foundation. Open Houses are also planned for Sunday, Nov. 27, and Sunday, Dec. 18, also from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

As October marches along we find ourselves nearing election day. Head to the first floor of the courthouse to earn your 'I Voted' sticker now; early voting continues until Nov. 4. Another way to make your voice heard today is by attending the Arts Town Hall sponsored by the Nevada Arts Association. They are looking for the ways that arts and culture can be improved in the Carson City area, among other things. While the mornings can be chilly, a walk with Muscle Powered along the Freeway Multi-use Path will get your blood pumping.

Dear goodness, autumn is beautiful around here. The leaves changing, the snow dusting our mountains, and the air is crisp. Keep a jacket handy, and enjoy a jaunt up Voltaire Canyon. Help celebrate community services as new names get added to the memorial outside the Marv Teixeira Pavilion. The League of Women Voters and Sierra Nevada Forums are almost done with this election, but not before they bring you a discussion about four of our ballot questions: be at the BAC Performance Hall by 6pm to see what they have to say.
