Veterans Day 2019: Remembering Stories of Honor That Can Inspire Us Today

Some way, somehow higher roads need to be taken and it needs to start with our ruling political class. Maybe these poignant stories from years past can rekindle a sense of honor that seems in short supply these days.

Famed World War II bomber to visit Minden-Tahoe Airport for tours and flights
Submitted by editor on Mon, 09/02/2019 - 5:28pmThe Commemorative Air Force B-17 Sentimental Journey will be in Douglas County at the Minden-Tahoe Airport arriving Tuesday, Sept. 3. The aircraft will be available for tours and flights, daily through Sept. 8.
The B-17 Flying Fortress was one of the most recognized WII bombers flying over Europe with the 8th Air Force out of England. It was made famous in movies like "Twelve O'Clock High" and "Command Decision."

The Carson Nugget has something special tonight, a Van Halen Tribute Band plays two concerts in their upstairs ballroom. For a lazy afternoon in the shade, you’ll find live music on the porch of the Genoa Bar. The Tahoe Orchestra brings their annual 9/11 Memorial Concert to St. Gall’s Church in Gardnerville. You’ll find annual events like Civil War Days in Virginia City and the Best in the West Rib Cook-off in Sparks, in addition to smaller happenings like the monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk and a roller derby double-header. If you haven’t made plans to head for the hills, take a look at your options and have a fun and safe Labor Day weekend.

Muscle Powered starts the day with a hike up Kings Canyon Road. In addition to sturdy shoes and water, you’ll want to bring a camera – the views of Eagle Valley are impressive. Start the weekend early with some live music for a good cause. Enjoy Greg Austin on the stage at Living the Good Life: there’s no cover, but a portion of tonight’s food and beverage sales will benefit the Swithwick/Francone family.

The annual Rib Cook-off in Sparks kicks off five days of barbeque heaven today – keep an eye open for our local champion, Carson City BBQ. Carson City BMX celebrates the end of the summer with a party at this evening’s practice. Songstress, Latisha Lewis, leads the band during tonight’s Jazz Night at Living the Good Life; if you’ve got some chops, bring an instrument and join the jam.

Don’t worry, you’ve still got four months for your holiday shopping, but Santa needs to hire a few helpers. The annual Polar Express on the V & T is getting ready to steam up and they are auditioning for elves etc. to lend a hand. The Nevada Arts Council has a new exhibit featuring Basque artwork; attend this evening’s artist reception to learn more about these unusual carvings. The ESL at Home program works quietly behind the scenes to bring better English language skills to non-native speakers.

The Pow Wow continues at the Stewart Indian School, and Epic Rides is still downtown. Enjoy an afternoon at the golf course: a free family golf clinic is at Eagle Valley. Head to Heritage Park in Gardnerville for a car show celebrating the Great Race.

World War II aviation buffs won’t want to miss the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport. Steampunk meets Steam trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum. Beware that quite a few of our downtown streets will be closed and there will be bikes everywhere. Live music can be found at a stage on Musser Street, the Brewery Arts Center, and most all of our casinos. A huge welcome goes out to those in town for the Annual Pow Wow at Stewart Indian School. Don't forget that Fathers' Day is Sunday: plenty of our local shops have something just perfect for the man in your life.

A rare B-17 bomber is making a stop at the Carson City Airport and will be available for rides and tours. Dancers can choose from country line dance at Carson Lanes or swing dance at El Charro Avita. Capital Eats inside of Westside Pour House just started a Tuesday night Basque dinner, but you’ll want to call for reservations and information on this week’s menu. Get your wing fix Firkin and Fox: it’s all you can eat chicken wings today. Save room for dessert, though, National Ice Cream Cone Day is worth celebrating.

Don’t miss the exhibit by Su Limbert in the Legislative Gallery, the session is over and the exhibit closes at the end of the week. While you’re downtown head over to the BRIC building on Proctor for the BRIC Art 5 exhibit. By the Nevada State Museum you’ll find the Nevada Arts Council: their gallery is exhibiting Pasha Rashat.

Head out to the Minden-Tahoe Airport and check out the WWII-era planes on display as part of the Wings of Freedom tour. Or enjoy some time with your shoes off in one of Carson City’s many parks: it’s also National Go Barefoot Day.

Wings of Freedom Tour returns in June with vintage WWII planes to Minden-Tahoe Airport

The World War II aviation museum visited the airport last year.
