With public safety, awareness and community at the center, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host its 15th annual Cops and Kids Open House this Saturday, May 19 at the sheriff's office administration building.

Muscle Powered, a Carson City non-profit that works to promote safer walking and biking conditions, is holding a Walk and Ride of Silence tonight, Wednesday May 16, to honor pedestrians and cyclists who have been injured or killed while traveling on public roadways.

May is Nevada Wildfire Awareness month. University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the fire agencies across the State are asking people to prepare their homes and communities to reduce the risks of a wildfire.

CARSON CITY — In Nevada, we know all too well that wildfires can strike at any time of the year. In recognition of National Wildfire Awareness Month in May, the Nevada Division of Forestry is collaborating with partnering agencies to help promote the importance of preventing, planning and preparing for wildfires in Nevada — during the warmer months and throughout the year.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — As part of Nevada’s celebration of Historic Preservation and Archaeological Awareness Month, there are dozens of May events and displays throughout the state. Among them is a display created by archaeologist Robert Elston that illustrates progress on a multi-year archaeological project funded through a National Science Foundation grant.

National statistics show that one in five adults suffers a mental health disorder in any given year in the United States. “We all know somebody,” said Tasha Martel, outreach coordinator for Partnership Carson City. “It’s not just the people who have to be medicated. So many people suffer from situational depression or anxiety, and they just need a little help.”

Nearly 100 people participated in the fourth annual Veterans Suicide Awareness March at Western Nevada College (WNC) Saturday in Carson City.

Community members are invited to support the Western Nevada College Veterans Resource Center at its fourth annual Veterans Suicide Awareness March at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 5 in Carson City.

CARSON CITY — Spring is in the air; a time to open the windows, soak in the season’s colorful blooms, and enjoy Nevada’s inspiring natural surroundings. In recognition of National Air Quality Awareness Week, April 30 through May 4, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection is helping to educate communities about the importance of reducing air pollution, promoting clean air, and fostering quality of life in Nevada – in the springtime and throughout the year.

CARSON CITY — Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. Nevada agencies and organizations have worked hard to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the Silver State, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

The number of available foster homes in Carson City is so low right now that siblings cannot reside together in emergency foster care, a local panel of child welfare advocates said.

Residents of local northern Nevada communities are encouraged to help keep their neighborhoods safe from wildfires by participating in “Junk the Junipers" on May 12 with drop off locations in Washoe Valley and Silver Lake.
