Tire fees fund recycling projects with grants throughout Nevada
The Nevada Department of Conservation & Natural Resources’ Division of Environmental Protection’s (NDEP) Recycling Program has awarded grants to five organizations throughout the State.
About $50,000 in grant funding has been made available for projects to increase recycling, public awareness of the importance of conserving natural resources, and for the reduction, reuse and recycling of solid waste. The funding comes from the Solid Waste Management Account that receives $1.00 per tire for each retail tire sold in Nevada.
2018 funded projects:
— Minden (Douglas County), Buckeye Recycling Drop-Off Center: Creation and placement of a recycling drop-off location at the Town of Minden Public Works Facility. With access to the recycling facility 24 hours a day, individuals have the ease and convenience of recycling closer to home: $11,475.
— Ely (White Pine County), Ely Recycling Center: The Ely Recycling Center Canopy Project will extend the current steel awning over the recycling baler, making the baling process more efficient for Recycling Center personnel and protecting cardboard and paper from water damage: $5,225.
— Las Vegas (Clark County), UNLV Vegas On-Site In Vessel Composting: UNLV will install a small-scale, custom-developed, in vessel composter, designed and built by UNLV Engineering students in a high school in the Las Vegas Valley. This proof-of-concept project has three purposes: demonstrate the viability of processing all of a school's compostable waste on site in Nevada's K-12 schools, establish the operating procedures, and facilitate the acceptability of composting through education at the site: $16,801.
To increase opportunities for local community residents to recycle solid waste recyclable products, this grant will be used to purchase painting supplies and labor to paint four buildings and provide signage for the recycling area: $6,650.
— Las Vegas (Clark County), Springs Preserve Special Event Recycling Project: The grant will be used to purchase ten recycling stations, which will be placed at various locations throughout the venue to encourage the recycling of paper, plastic and other items used at special events held at the Springs Preserve, and to experiment with labeling techniques to maximize results. Six color-coded bins will be grouped together to form one recycling station: $9,160.
“Our goal is to increase awareness of the benefits of recycling and create more opportunities for Nevadans to conserve valuable natural resources,” said Eric Noack, Chief of NDEP’s Bureau of Waste Management.
