Work Stoppage On Yucca Mountain Review Not The End Of Nuclear Waste Project, State Official Says

CARSON CITY – Nevada remains in limbo over the status of Yucca Mountain as a potential repository for the nation’s nuclear waste even with a work stoppage on the project review by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission due to funding limitations, a state official says.

Proscenium Players hold Carson City auditions for murder mystery

Proscenium Players, in conjunction with the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino in Carson City, will hold open auditions for the murder mystery "Eat, Drink and Be Murdered."

Auditions will be held at the Carson City Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino in the Juniper Room on Wednesday, Oct. 13th and Thursday, Oct. 14th from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Those auditioning will be asked to do cold readings and some improvisational acting.

Carson City man hawks sister's wedding ring, buys smokes

Carson City authorities arrested an unemployed man who admitted to stealing his sister's wedding ring, pawning it at a shop and then used some of the money to buy cigarettes.

Gregory Lee Snelson, 30, of Carson City, faces a felony grand larceny charge. He is being held on $25,000 bail.

According to the arrest report, officers met the sister of Snelson at the Carson City Sheriff's Office. The woman told authorities that her wedding ring was missing from her room on Monday and said she and her husband searched the home but couldn't find it.

Nugget Project tidbits

There is an interesting discussion going on over at the Nevada Appeal site concerning the Nugget Project.

The story begins two week ago when Guy Farmer wrote a rather harsh column that slammed the Nugget Project. In response, last week there was a guest column by Michael Douglass criticizing Farmer's take on the subject.

Sheriff Furlong responds to opponent's comment about gang problem

A comment posted by sheriff candidate Bob Guimont has drawn a lengthy and detailed response by the person he is hoping to replace.

Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong sent Carson Now his response to Guimont's comment that was posted after a gang-related shooting incident two weeks ago. Carson Now contacted Guimont and verified that the comment did in fact come from him.

Carson City School District president 'amazed' marijuana charge dropped against principal

At least one Carson City School District official is troubled by the outcome of Friday's misdemeanor driving under the influence guilty plea by Carson Middle School Principal Sam Santillo.
School board trustee president Norm Scoggin said he's "amazed" that a misdemeanor charge of possession of less than an ounce of marijuana was dropped by the Washoe County District Attorney's Office.

Carson City mom faces felony child abuse charges after ER finds meth in infant's system

A Carson City woman who told authorities she had smoked methamphetamine and then fell asleep next to her infant daughter faces felony child abuse charges after the baby tested positive for the drug.
Charlene Marie Benitez, 22, is being held at the Carson City Jail on $50,000 bond after being arrested early Saturday morning. Charges include felony child endangerment and abuse that caused the infant physical or mental harm. The condition of the infant is unknown at this time.
Subsequent portions of the investigation report appear to be withheld.
