Know Your Neighbor: Welcoming the new City Manager of Carson City, Nancy Paulson
As of December, Nancy Paulson is the new City Manager of Carson City, after becoming Interim City Manager back in June. She took a break from work to share a bit of her story and her plans for Carson City's future.
How long have you been with the city?
I celebrated 20 years with the City on Dec 4, 2018. I came to the City after working for an accounting firm that performed the City’s annual audit of its financial records. I worked my way up in the Finance Department and became Chief Financial Officer in August 2015. Two years later in August 2017, I was promoted to Deputy City Manager. With the departure of the City Manager in June 2018, I was appointed the interim City Manager. As of December 20, 2018 I am the new City Manager with a 2 year agreement.
Why did you want to be city manager?
My financial background and years of experience with the City have prepared me and given me the necessary tools to be City Manager. I know how to balance funding between taking care of critical deferred maintenance needs, employee contracts, maintaining service levels and increasing reserves. I also know the importance of cutting back spending when necessary. I truly believe that the City’s most important asset is our human capital. Growing our own leaders through successful recruitment, retention and succession planning is critical to maintaining historical knowledge and sends the message to the City’s employees that they are valued. I can speak from experience—it works! Employee development and a positive work environment are the foundations of my management style and will be part of my focus.
What are you most excited to do as city manager?
I’m most excited about being a part of the improvements we’re making all over the City. These include improvements to our corridors starting with the South Carson Complete Streets Project. This project will beautify the City’s gateways, stimulate economic activity and provide safer travel for pedestrians and cyclists. We are also in the process of making major improvements to the City’s Aquatic Facility and Community Center. These are key recreational venues in our community that enhance our quality of life.
I am also excited about partnering with the Carson City Culture & Tourism Authority to make improvements to other City recreational facilities in order to attract more special events and tourism and make this a place where businesses want to be. Lastly and most important, I want to be a part of making this community the place that our kids want to come back to and raise their own families.
