Carson City deputies arrest motorcycle rider for alleged unsafe driving, weapon violation

A 33-year-old Gardnerville man was arrested in the area of South Carson Street for misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and carless driving after riding a motorcycle unsafely, causing other vehicles on the roadway to slow and alter their direction of travel, a Carson City sheriff's report states.

While deputies were observing, one of the three motorcyclists failed to maintain their lane by completely crossing the white dashed lane lines of lanes 1 and 2 on South Carson Street. The motorcycle did not use any blinker indicators, the report states.

The rider continued northbound on S. Carson in the number 2 lane between Sonoma and Colorado, stood up on his food pegs, extended out his right leg, and made contact with another motorcycle rider in the group. This leg kick by the rider caused the second rider to briefly lose his balance and make a recovery move to keep the bike upright.

At the red light, the motorcycles stopped; when it turned green, the rider then pulled his bike into a wheelie and accelerated at a high rate of speed.

Deputies then activated their emergency lights and stopped the motorcycle. All three stopped and deputies told the other two riders they were free to leave, as they had not broken any laws.

The man told deputies he “didn’t do a real wheelie” since his wheel only “got about a foot off the ground.”

Deputies asked if he had any weapons on his person, and he said he was carrying a gun. Deputies asked where the gun was and he pointed to his left chest area. When asked if he had a valid concealed carry weapons permit, he admitted he did not. He was taken into custody without incident. Bail: $2,650.

— A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the area of Apollo Drive for possession of a controlled substance and Department of Alternative Sentencing violation.

According to the report, Chance Banta was arrested after deputies were dispatched to the 2800 block of Gardner Lane in reference to a suspicious subject. Dispatch advised a male subject wearing all black clothing and a black backpack was seen looking through multiple vehicle windows.

Upon arrival, deputies located the man, identified as Banta, walking west on Apollo Drive; he looked at the deputies, looked up toward the sky and then turned away from the the deputy.

Deputies approached him and asked what he was doing. He immediately began “talking in a manner which did not make sense,” according to the deputies, and was extremely fidgety.

Deputies asked if they could search his backpack and he said yes. Inside, deputies located a white crystalline substance which they identified as methamphetamine.

He was taken into custody for possession, and DAS advised they’d be placing a hold on him as well. Bail: $5,500; $3,000 cash only.

— A 21-year-old transient man and a 23-year-old transient woman were arrested Friday night for misdemeanor petit larceny, driving without a valid driver’s license, no proof of insurance, no proof of registration, and fictitious license plates.

The pair was arrested after a Special Enforcement Team deputy was in a local department store parking lot when they saw a man pushing a shopping cart filled with items. A few seconds later, a woman walked up to the man from the same direction he had come from and they began quickly unloading items into the back of the car while checking constantly if they were being watched.

The deputy followed the pair and learned the license plate was registered to a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta, while this vehicle was a Subaru, which made deputies think the vehicle was stolen, the arrest report states.

They activated their emergency lights, and witnessed the man turn around in the vehicle and began digging around in the backseat. Deputies thought they might be looking for a weapon, and when the car pulled over, deputies ordered the pair out of the vehicle at gun point, the arrest report states.

The deputies spoke to the man, who said he and the woman had been together for two years and were living in the car, and he wanted to change their situation. They had stolen items from the department store such as tents, camping gear, dry bags, and lights because they were going to go camp out in Sun Valley, the report states.

He said he had just gotten out of jail three months prior for stealing food from the Winco in Reno. He said it was “all him,” and the woman hadn’t taken anything; however, when deputies spoke with the woman, she admitted that they had taken and stolen the items.

Bail for the man: $1,505; bail for the woman: $352.
