Carson City area weather: Gusty winds, snow and cold beginning late Tuesday
A strong cold front will move through the Carson City region and Sierra from Tuesday night into Wednesday bringing the potential for damaging winds, widespread snow down to all valley floors and very cold temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.
A High Wind Watch has been issued, likely to turn into a High Wind Warning by Tuesday. The weather service advises wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected in the valleys and 75 mph in wind prone areas. Gusts of 120 are possible along the Sierra Crest.
The weather service advises to secure outdoor items such as holiday decorations, loose outdoor furniture and to be prepared for any power outages with flashlights, candles and batteries. You should also bring in the pets as it will be cold outside.
As for the white stuff, it is expected to be an intense short duration event with snow falling at all elevations and the valley floor. Around 2 inches is possible for the Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County areas and up to 6 inches of snow is possible at Lake Tahoe. The snow is expected to impact Wednesday morning commutes.
The storm will also produce very cold temperatures, the coldest thus far of the season with overnight lows in the single digits to teens and high temperatures likely in the low 30s, according to the weather service.
