Carson City FoodMaxx opens in grand style
A long line of shoppers waited outside the new FoodMaxx grocery store at 3325 Highway 50 East in Carson City Wednesday morning, hoping to qualify for one of 200 free bags filled with groceries to kick off the grand opening celebration of the supermarket chain's 54th store.
For the first time since March 25, shoppers walked through the front doors of the 52,000-square-foot store, which had been a Save Mart Supermarket for years in that location.
Its closure on March 26, 2016 concerned many area residents who relied on the store for its convenience. The site is the only grocery store east of the I-580 freeway bypass in Carson City.
But Save Mart Companies, which owns the FoodMaxx brand, assured customers that re-opening the store under a new name would not change its dedication to serving the community.
“Our first store in Nevada is such a hit, we’re ready to expand. We’re fired up about showing Carson City residents what we’re all about. We bring products in by the truckload. Volume means our shoppers can stretch their food dollar,” said Frank Capps, general manager of FoodMaxx.
"We are so proud to have FoodMaxx be a part of our community," said Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell.
Demonstrating its commitment to the Carson City community, FoodMaxx matched donations at the checkout register Wednesday up to $1,500 for the Ron Wood Family Resource Center.
The store also pledged $500 donations to Friends In Service Helping (FISH) as well as to Empire Elementary, its adopted school whose students were on-hand Wednesday morning singing Christmas songs as part of the grand opening festivities.
The grocery store began a major remodel after construction permits were issued by the city on Aug. 8. Plans for tenant improvement were submitted to the Carson City Community Development Department on July 15, officials with the Carson City Building Division had said.
While the building's exterior looks pretty much the same — except for the FoodMaxx badging — its interior has a completely different look and feel meant to reflect warehouse-style shopping, which is membership-free.
Wednesday's opening in Carson City marked the brand's second store in Nevada within the past month. Sparks recently opened a FoodMaxx in November.
The store held two hiring events this fall, including one in October and another in November just before Thanksgiving to prepare for the December grand opening.
Wayne Cobb was picked as store manager and has hired approximately 75 employees. FoodMaxx had said it planned to hire about 70 employees for its Carson City location.
