Carson City's Project Empty Bowls features hot soups, holiday entertainment, auction and more
In its sixth year, Carson City has fought hunger during the holidays in a very unique way by serving delicious hot soups prepared by local restaurants that are dished up in ceramic bowls made by the hands of people in the community.
This Friday, the all-you-can-eat fundraiser returns, this time at the Carson Mall, with an array of holiday entertainment, an auction, raffle and more to go along with delicious, savory and soothing hot soup delights.
The event runs from 4 to 8 p.m. inside the Carson Mall's north entrance.
The annual fundraiser began six years ago through the efforts of Carson City Art Gallery owner Robin McGregor. Since then it has blossomed into a must-attend community holiday event where soups from local restaurants are served up steaming hot into homemade ceramic bowls hand crafted at gatherings throughout the year.
According to organizers, the Carson City community, along with an amazing group of volunteers, have spent the entire year turning lumps of wet clay into ceramic bowls. Local potters and artists, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, school kids, neighbors, new friends, even folks just visiting Nevada, have created more than 1,000 bowls this year.
The idea is simple: Potters and craftspeople work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited for a simple meal prepared and donated by local restaurants. In exchange for a $15 donation, guests are invited to choose a bowl from a Bowl Gallery and join in for dinner.
The ceramic bowls are those for the guests to keep, serving as a reminder that there are Empty Bowls in our own community. The donation for the event includes Includes one artisan bowl and an all you can eat meal prepared by 20 local restaurants.
There is a Family Rate: $5 per additional person includes the meal without a bowl. A Silent auction and raffle will be held during the event. It is not necessary to be present to win.
Mall stores and restaurants along with the Annual Carson Mall Craft Fair will be open during the event.
Jared Arreguini will be the emcee for the evening’s entertainment, featuring:
— Tom Streckel: performing Stone Soup, an ancient tale of sharing
— Sierra Lutheran Choir
— The Carson Orchestra
— Carson Middle School Band
All of the money raised goes to Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, to help support their food services. FISH is a local non-profit providing food, housing, and services for more than 8,000 people in Carson City annually.
Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door.
Tickets are available at Ogres-Holm Pottery and Action Home Furniture, inside the Carson Mall and online at: Emptybowlscarsoncity.com.
