Consort Canzona Holiday Concert Friday in Carson City
Consort Canzona, a select group of instrumentalists and singers specializing in early music, will present “An Early Music Christmas” concert for the holiday season on Friday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m., at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 Highway 395 (just south of Best Buy) in Carson City. Admission is free, donations welcome.
The concert features a setting by Michael Praetorius, who lived from 1571 to 1621, of a traditional Christmas Carol, In Dulci Jubilo, that dates from the Middle Ages. Another highlight is Personent Hodie (On this day Earth Shall Ring), a German carol from 1360 arranged by contemporary English composer John Rutter in 1974. The program also includes Mirabile Mysterium, Ave Maria, Es Ist Ein Rose Entsprungen, and more.
Carson City musician Sharon Kientz formed Consort Canzona in 2009 for recorders, cello, and harpsichord. Singers were added in 2011. The group is directed by Lora Mills, who is also Assistant Director of the UNR Chamber Singers.
Consort Canzona is a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association. It is supported in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and by Association memberships and donations.
