Fifth annual Empty Bowls to fill Carson City empty stomachs
For many of us, our bowls are never empty. That cannot be said for those less fortunate who live paycheck to paycheck or live in the various motels filled with those who cannot afford permanent housing for their families.
Friends in Service Helping, also known as F.I.S.H., continues to work to make certain those living in our community will not have to experience food insecurity, described by the USDA as a state in which “consistent access to adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources at times during the year.”
FISH invites you to join them in the fight against hunger by enjoying a warm bowl of soup and bread at City Hall during the Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights this Friday, Dec. 1 beginning at 5 pm.

Executive Director Jim Peckham states, “Wonderful local restaurants are donating the soup and bread that will fill our Empty Bowls and for a minimum donation of $15 (or $5, soup only, with the purchase of a $15 ticket), you may select one of the bowls — yours to keep — and enjoy a warm winter meal to launch the holiday season.”
The bowls created by so many local artists will serve as a reminder there are many empty bowls in our community. The Girl Scouts Troop 201 held a bowl painting at the Nugget and Ogre Holm Pottery dedicated an Empty Bowl kiln at their studio/shop within the Carson Mall to allow artists between the ages of 3 and 92 to create and contribute 109 bowls to the event. Linda Ritter of Pinyon Pottery has donated 50 hand-crafted bowls.
The local business community, too, becomes involved in the annual event by donating items for the raffle.
All proceeds from this event will be donated to FISH, a local non-profit that supports our community and works to feed the hungry.
Tickets are available at any FISH thrift store, at Ogres-Holm Pottery, online at www.nvfish.com or on the evening of the event.
Giving back to the community is important for Merrill and Jo Moore, owners of Ogre Holm Pottery and Teaching Studio, who invite you to join them on Dec. 1 “to celebrate our vibrant community and help us support the folks who do so much to fighter hunger here at home.”
