Holiday with a Hero campaign gets $2,500 boost from Capital Ford; Downtown Holiday Crawl on for Dec. 3

Community fundraising efforts continue throughout town to meet the $25,000 goal for the 12th annual Holiday with a Hero campaign to benefit Carson City school children who may not otherwise have a nice Christmas this year.

On Tuesday, Capital Ford in Carson City made a generous donation of $2,500, presenting a check to the Carson City Sheriff's Office and Carson City Fire Department.

"We were offered an opportunity to help and we jumped right on it," said Tim Milligan, general manager of Capital Ford.

Elsewhere, Kaia F.I.T, a women’s fitness program, is inviting all women to work off the Thanksgiving Feast in a heroic way to help the community’s children in need.

Black Light Yoga will be offered at the Carson City and Minden locations 8 a.m. Friday at $10 per person. Proceeds benefit the Holiday with a Hero.

“It’s an amazing thing to be able to help these kids,” said Bridey Heidel, co-owner of Kaia F.I.T Carson City and Minden. “It’s a really sweet endeavor to be able to them.”

The Carson City class will be at 3633 Research Way #104, Minden's at 2231 Meridian Blvd # 2. For more information, call Carson City at (775) 841-4962 or Minden at (775) 782-4496.

Hosted by the Carson City School District, the Carson City Sheriffs Office and the Carson City Fire Department, Holiday With A Hero is a program that ensures underprivileged children in Carson City have a proper Christmas.

Donations are collected for 10 weeks and dispersed to designated and pre-qualified students as Walmart gift cards. Local fire, police, medical, and military guide the students through the store to spend their money on gifts for them and their families.

Meanwhile, downtown Carson City businesses will be offering special signature food and drink items during the second annual Holiday Crawl on Dec. 3.

“We’re going to have bands at Telegraph Square and McFadden Plaza, and DJs and karaoke all around,” said Meliah Gonzales. “There really is going to be something for everyone.”

Gonzales, a bailiff at the Carson City Courthouse, has served on the Holiday with a Hero committee since its inception 12 years ago.

The crawl benefits Holiday with a Hero, which pairs children in need with cops, firefighters, servicemen or other volunteers to spend $100 on Christmas gifts at Walmart for themselves and their families.

Gonzales said the goal for this year is to raise $25,000 for children in the Carson City School District’s McKinney-Vento Students in Transition program, which serves children who live in motels, cars, campgrounds, grandparents or double up with other families.

Gonzales said the children often take care of the basics first during the shopping spree.

“They buy necessities, things you and I take for granted,” she said. “They buy hygiene products, food and clothing.”
With what they have left, she said, they will buy toys for themselves and their siblings.

“Without this program, their needs wouldn’t be met. Without this program, they wouldn’t have gifts,” Gonzales said. “For a lot of these children, this is the only Christmas they are going to get.”

Another benefit for the children, she said, is to show them potential career paths with volunteers and also help heal relationships after they’ve seen their parents or family get in trouble with the law.

“For some of the children, they are afraid of us,” she said. “This is an opportunity to fix that relationship.”

The Crawl will run 5-10 p.m., with early check-in beginning 4 p.m. at the Studio inside Adam’s Hub. Participants will receive a cup, bracelet, a map and the first drink for free. More than 20 business will participate.

Revelers are encouraged to wear Christmas attire, with awards being given for the best costume.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Group tickets pricing is 12 tickets for $200. Holiday attire is encouraged. Go here for tickets.
